Method To The Madness of Correction

One of the most misunderstood areas of dog training by beginners,is how,why and when to administer "corrections" to their dog.
Some trainers and handlers choose to use newer methods for different dogs. One promotes strictly motivational methods to train dogs. Some people call this clicker training or marker training. The true purists in clicker training don’t feel corrections are ever needed.
I would have to disagree with those people. 99% of all dogs are going to need corrections to maintain consistency under distraction, in my opinion.
Determining when corrections are introduced, what type of corrections are used and how they are applied, results in how effective they will be in your training.
The wrong kind of correction,a poorly timed correction,even lack of correction results in inconsistent training and poor communications with your dog.

If you are around dogs long enough you will hear the term "FORCE TRAINING". This word can be misinterpreted and I have witnessed this type of training to work. But unfortunately sometimes it hurts the relationship with your dog.
To understand what force training is you should first know how to motivate a dog. There are 4 methods to motivate a dog to do what you want it to do:
1- using food rewards
2 -with toy rewards
3- with praise from his handler
4- Or you can motivate your dog to follow commands by forcing him to do what you want.
The problem is when owners don't understand the timing and application of force, their dogs become stressed and the compliance goes away.
Correcting a dog for refusing to comply with a command that it absolutely knows what the command means IS NOT forced training.
Asking a dog to perform a behavior that it has never been taught to do and then correcting that dog until it does perform that behavior IS forced training.
The only time to apply a correction in training your dog is after you have taught your dog the meaning of a command. When you are 110% sure your dog knows what you mean when you say SIT or DOWN, and the dog refuses to comply then the dog needs a correction for non-compliance.
Now the skill of training your dog is to know what kind of correction to apply,what level is correct to give,and finally do you offer a reward after the dog complies or do you just go on with training. This knowledge comes with a handlers consistent exposure and with experience.

Another often used method in dog training is called negative punishment. Negative punishment is used with trainers who use food rewards and toy rewards. It simply means when dogs make mistakes the trainer corrects the dog by witholding the reward. There is no physical correction. Withholding the reward is enough for many dogs. Withholding the reward becomes the negative punisher.
With repetition dogs learn to understand this concept. There is no anger involved. There is no threat involved. There is no change in your voice to signify a change in your attitude.Simply put, the reward is held for ransom.
An example is with pet dogs that jump up on their owner. When the owner has a reward in hand and the dog jumps on them, they simply say NO and wait until the dog backs off before giving the reward. If the reward has a high enough value to the dog it will not take long for the dog to learn that the only way to get the reward is to NOT jump up on it's owner.

Positive punishment means the dog gets a physical correction.
For some dogs negative punishment is not enough. These dogs need positive punishment.
This means the dog knows what he is suppose to do and he chooses not doing it, either as a result of lack of motivation or a lack of concentration in the face of of distractions.
This type of behaviour means there is something going on that the dog wants more than what it is you have. At this point the dog needs to get a correction and the correction needs to be more complex than just removing the something he wants.
This is where we add positive punishment. This means we add a correction after the word NO. Some trainers will use two words. One for negative punishment (withholding a reward) and a different word for positive punishment (adding a correction). The fact is over time every dog is going to figure this out.
It is critical that trainers not add positive punishment until the dog knows exactly what he is expected to be doing. To introduce positive punishment before the dog understands the meaning of a command simply reverts back to Forced Training.
The way positive punishment works is to say "NO" and split second later give a leash correction or in later training a correction with a remote collar.
Mature dogs are going to quickly figure out that when you say "NO" they need to immediately change their behavior and do what you want or if they don't you are going to correct them.
The dog is basically going to anticipate the correction and quickly change their behavior. In other words it is going to behave just as if you just gave him a leash correction. When you test your training and you see behavior changes immediately after you say "NO" that's when you don't need to give a correction every time you say "NO". All to often I see handlers saying NO,NO,NO!! and the dogs behavior doesn't change at all. Obviously what this handler is doing is not working. That dog doesn't respect the positive punisher. Either the correction was not strong enough or the correction did not follow the "NO" often enough for the dog to believe the correction was ever going to come.
The bottom line for positive punishment to work is the handler needs to do something to have the word "NO" mean something to the dog. Withholding a reward doesn't mean anything because the dog is distracted with whatever else is going on that they don't care about withholding the reward and the dog has not learned to respect the word NO.

The fact is we would much rather work with reward based training. Its more fun to do, the dogs like it and it's way more forgiving to a handlers mistakes, especially when the dogs are learning. If a handler makes a mistake when the dog is learning its not a big deal. They can get past it with a bunch more reps.
Handlers that make mistakes with positive punishers have dogs that slink around and act like their world just as soon not be there because they don't understand what just happened and they don't want it to happen again. As you start positive punishment your timing needs to be perfect. The handler/trainer needs to understand the importance of his or her timing because if you screw it up you are not going to fix it very quickly.
Handlers must also be very careful with distractions and punishers. The reason is that when its done poorly the dog will associate the distraction with a punisher. It's very easy for a handler to screw up and make a dog fearful of certain distractions.
What handlers need to think about is if a correction is warranted because they know the dog understands what's being asked but the handler finds himself having to correct the dog over and over again for the same thing, then something is wrong. Either the correction isn't hard enough, the dog didn't understand what was being asked or the distractions are to much for the dog. Or when they know the dog understands what they are asking them to do and the handler gives a correction for noncompliance and this becomes a pattern where the handler finds himself continuing to correct the dog for the same thing again and again and again - well the handler needs to step back an re-evaluate what they are doing because it's not working.

Just a little something to keep in mind this training season as you work to polish up your dog for home,testing or hunting. Remember to keep a positive attitude, stay in control and if tempers flare, walk away, re-evaluate and return with a confident, assertive attitude.

Hessian's TV Appearance

I worked at Wasatch Wing and Clay this fall and winter. Picked up some guiding work with Hessian and boy was that fun! Met alot of great people and had a wonderful time working the dog for all to enjoy. It has been great being able to watch the dog work and I really enjoyed the reaction from the clients when they see what Hessian can do. Pure amazement at the obedience,skill, talent and pure drive of the DD. Always fun to watch! Wasatch has hosted a number of events this year. Pheasant derby's, tower hunts, clay tournaments. The funnest one for me was the 2 Shot Derby. Hessian and I guided a group of hunters while the hunt was taped for a local program, Hooked On Utah. It was one of the best times I had out there. I have been asked by many people that missed the show or want to see it again, how to view more. So, I have included a link to all the videos from that event. The club is only open for dog training and clay shooting now, but the season opens September 1st, so be sure to get out there! VJP Show and Tell

April 9th, we put together a "show and tell" for some new pup owners and handlers. A few will be testing next week and others had brand new pups, but came to check it out anyway. The weather was cold and snowbound, but all showed and the day was a success. We gathered at Wasatch Wing and Clay, ran through the details of test day, worked with each dog and handler on tracking, searching,pointing, cooperation, gunfire stability and tips for test day. Had a great lunch in a warm facility and all went home feeling a little better about VJP day. It was good exposure for dogs and handlers alike. When coming into the DD world it can be intimidating. We want our puppy owners to test, so we can watch the direction the breed is going, and get an idea of what dogs are producing what pups. It is also good for the new owners to get involved in testing as it will help them better understand thier dog along with the training and dedication it takes. Not only were these new members shown the breakdown of what a VJP test is, they learned training tips, got ideas and met and talked with other new members in the same shoes. It will help to take alot of pressure off come test day and make it a smoother transition into the testing system. We need to help out these new folks, they are interested and pleased with there DD's as much as we are, and we need to keep it that way. If we let new members slip through our fingers, that dog too will be lost. We will not know what that dog or owner could have contributed to the organization. Just A Dog Gone Good Story

Had friend email this to me a while ago. Not Draht related but just plain dog related,Working at a dog day care,hunting and training and in dealing with people and dogs on a daily basis, I have noticed the bonds that are built and broken. Unfortunately we live in an imperfect world and life happens. Sometimes a situation occurs that we can not control. This story is about one of those types of situations, and how one dog owner changed the life of another..

They told me the big black Lab's name was Reggie, as I looked at him lying in his pen.. The shelter was clean, no-kill, and the people really friendly. I'd only been in the area for six months, but everywhere I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and open.
Everyone waves when you pass them on the street.
But something was still missing as I attempted to settle in to my new
life here, and I thought a dog couldn't hurt. Give me someone to talk
to. And I had just seen Reggie's advertisement on the local news. The
shelter said they had received numerous calls right after, but they
said the people who had come down to see him just didn't look like
"Lab people," whatever that meant. They must've thought I did.
But at first, I thought the shelter had misjudged me in giving me Reggie
and his things, which consisted of a dog pad, bag of toys almost all
of which were brand new tennis balls, his dishes, and a sealed letter
from his previous owner. See, Reggie and I didn't really hit it off
when we got home. We struggled for two weeks (which is how long the
shelter told me to give him to adjust to his new home). Maybe it was
the fact that I was trying to adjust, too. Maybe we were too
much alike.
For some reason, his stuff (except for the tennis balls --- he wouldn't
go anywhere without two stuffed in his mouth) got tossed in with all
of my other unpacked boxes. I guess I didn't really think he'd need
all his old stuff, that I'd get him new things once he settled in.
But it became pretty clear pretty soon that he wasn't going to.
I tried the normal commands the shelter told me he knew, ones like
"sit" and "stay" and "come" and "heel," and he'd follow them - when he felt like it. He never really seemed to listen when I called his name --- sure, he'd
look in my direction after the fourth or fifth time I said it, but then
he'd just go back to doing whatever. When I'd ask again, you could
almost see him sigh and then grudgingly obey. This just wasn't going
to work. He chewed a couple shoes and some unpacked boxes. I was a
little too stern with him and he resented it, I could tell. The
friction got so bad that I couldn't wait for the two weeks to be up,
and when it was, I was in full-on search mode for my cell phone amid
all of my unpacked stuff. I remembered leaving it on the stack of
boxes for the guest room, but I also mumbled, rather cynically, that
the "damn dog probably hid it on me."
Finally I found it, but before I could punch up the shelter's number, I also
found his pad and other toys from the shelter...I tossed the pad in
Reggie's direction and he snuffed it and wagged, some of the most
enthusiasm I'd seen since bringing him home. But then I called,
"Hey, Reggie, you like that? Come here and I'll give you a
treat." Instead, he sort of glanced in my direction --- maybe "glared"
is more accurate --- and then gave a discontented sigh and flopped
down .... with his back to me.
Well,that's not going to do it either, I thought. And I punched the
shelter phone number.
But I hung up when I saw the sealed envelope. I had completely forgotten
about that, too. "Okay, Reggie," I said out loud,
"let's see if your previous owner has any advice."

To Whoever Gets My Dog:
Well,
I can't say that I'm happy you're reading this, a letter I told the
shelter could only be opened by Reggie's new owner. I'm not even
happy writing it. If you're reading this, it means I just got back
from my last car ride with my Lab after dropping him off at the
shelter. He knew something was different. I have packed up his pad
and toys before and set them by the back door before a trip, but this
time... it's like he knew something was wrong. And something is
wrong...which is why I have to go to try to make it right.
So let me tell you about my Lab in the hopes that it will help you bond
with him and he with you.
First,
he loves tennis balls. The more the merrier. Sometimes I think he's part squirrel, the way he hordes them. He usually always has two in his mouth, and he tries to
get a third in there. Hasn't done it yet. Doesn't matter where you
throw them, he'll bound after it, so be careful - really don't do it
by any roads. I made that mistake once, and it almost cost him
dearly.
Next,commands.
Maybe the shelter staff already told you, but I'll go over them again:
Reggie knows the obvious ones --- "sit," "stay," "come," "heel."
He knows hand signals: "back" to turn around and go back when
you put your hand straight up; and "over" if you put your
hand out right or left. "Shake" for shaking water off, and
"paw" for a high-five. He does "down" when he
feels like lying down --- I bet you could work on that with him some
more. He knows "ball" and "food" and "bone" and "treat" like nobodies business.
I trained Reggie with small food treats. Nothing opens his ears like little pieces of hot dog.
Feeding schedule: twice a day, once about seven in the morning, and again at
six in the evening. Regular store-bought stuff; the shelter has the brand.
He's up on his shots. Call the clinic on 9Th Street and update his info
with yours; they'll make sure to send you reminders for when he's
due. Be forewarned: Reggie hates the vet. Good luck getting him in
the car. I don't know how he knows when it's time to go to the vet,
but he knows.
Finally, give him some time. I've never been married, so it's only been Reggie
and me for his whole life He's gone everywhere with me, so please
include him on your daily car rides if you can. He sits well in the
backseat, and he doesn't bark or complain. He just loves to be around
people, and me most especially.
Which means that this transition is going to be hard, with him going to
live with someone new. And that's why I need to share one more bit of
info with you....
His name's not Reggie.
I don't know what made me do it, but when I dropped him off at the
shelter, I told them his name was Reggie. He's a smart dog, he'll get
used to it and will respond to it, of that I have no doubt. But I just
couldn't bear to give them his real name. For me to do that, it
seemed so final, that handing him over to the shelter was as good as
me admitting that I'd never see him again. And if I end up coming
back, getting him, and tearing up this letter, it means every thing's
fine. But if someone else is reading it, well ... well it means that
his new owner should know his real name. It'll help you bond with
him. Who knows, maybe you'll even notice a change in his demeanor if
he's been giving you problems.
His real name is "Tank".
Because that is what I drive.
Again,if you're reading this and you're from the area, maybe my name has
been on the news. I told the shelter that they couldn't make
"Reggie" available for adoption until they received word
from my company commander. See, my parents are gone, I have no
siblings, no one I could've left Tank with ... and it was my only
real request of the Army upon my deployment to Iraq , that they make
one phone.. call the shelter ... in the "event" ... to tell
them that Tank could be put up for adoption. Luckily, my colonel is a
dog guy, too, and he knew where my platoon was headed. He said he'd
do it personally. And if you're reading this, then he made good on
his word.
Well,this letter is getting downright depressing, even though, frankly,
I'm just writing it for my dog. I couldn't imagine if I was writing
it for a wife and kids and family ... but still, Tank has been my
family for the last six years, almost as long as the Army has been my
family.
And now I hope and pray that you make him part of your family and that he
will adjust and come to love you the same way he loved me.
That unconditional love from a dog is what I take with me to Iraq as an
inspiration to do something selfless, to protect innocent people from
those who would do terrible things ... and to keep those terrible
people from coming over here. If I have to give up Tank in order to
do it, I am glad to have done so. He is my example of service and of
love. I hope I honored him by my service to my country and comrades.
All right, that's enough. I deploy this evening and have to drop this
letter off at the shelter. I don't think I'll say another good-bye to
Tank, though. I cried too much the first time. Maybe I'll peek in on
him and see if he finally got that third tennis ball in his mouth.
Good luck with Tank. Give him a good home, and give him an extra kiss
goodnight - every night - from me.

I folded the letter and slipped it back in the envelope. Sure I had
heard of Paul Mallory, everyone in town knew him, even new people
like me. Local kid, killed in Iraq a few months ago and post humorously
earning the Silver Star when he gave his life to save three buddies. Flags
had been at half-mast all summer.
I leaned forward in my chair and rested my elbows on my knees, staring
at the dog.
"Hey,Tank," I said quietly.

The dog's head whipped up, his ears cocked and his eyes bright.
"C'mere boy."
He was instantly on his feet, his nails clicking on the hardwood floor. He sat in front of me, his head tilted, searching for the name he hadn't heard in months.
"Tank," I whispered.
His tail swished.
I kept whispering his name, over and over, and each time, his ears
lowered, his eyes softened, and his posture relaxed as a wave of
contentment just seemed to flood him. I stroked his ears, rubbed his
shoulders, buried my face into his scruff and hugged him.
"It's me now, Tank, just you and me. Your old pal gave you to me."
Tank reached up and licked my cheek. "So what do ya say we play some ball?"
His ears perked again. "Yeah? Ball? You like that? Ball?"
Tank tore from my hands and disappeared in the next room.
And when he came back, he had three tennis balls in his mouth.

Armbruster 2010

The Wild West Chapter of the VDD was in turn for hosting the Armbruster HZP breed test and breed show for 2010. We chose Boise,ID as the event spot. It had some challenging water and field areas along with a central location in town,close to everything that was needed.
The weather made conditions challenging in the field for sure. It was very warm and dry and it made tracking rabbits and pointing scent conditions a real deal breaker. It was a smaller outcome than last year but all in all a great turn out.
We arrived the opening day of the event and checked out the water and breed show areas. Handlers and spectators began to join and gather, as we had the "Sears" father and son team managing the Beer Gardens and we provided a catered BBQ dinner with all the fixins Old West Style! After dinner the handlers and judges meetings were underway, and a plan was discussed so everyone involved was on the same page. Once all the official business was taken care of we started a Silent Auction that included a Moose Quilt, Blood Tracking collars,Dog Bed, and a Arizona Quail Hunt! We also talked Brandt Hardy into being our Auctioneer for the Live Auction we held as well that evening that had some nice items including a Yeti Cooler, California Waterfowl Hunt,and a California Quail Hunt! We also announced the winner of the Raffle for the Browning Citori shotgun.....which was Blake Gibson who also ran a dog and did very well. The first evening wrapped up around dark, as all had a big weekend ahead.
The first day of testing opened early, with field groups and water/breed show groups meeting up and heading off to the appropriate locations. The temperatures were still high, very warm and dry. Scenting was no easy task for any dog,and even the water portion of the test had it's moments of defeat as well. I was helping around the breed show and water areas, so I was unable to see any of the field work,but there was no lack of stories as to the outcomes.
The second day of testing was the same agenda, however field and water groups switched and continued on. It was another very warm, dry day. Scenting conditions were tough and made it challenging for the dogs. It was a long day in the field work portion and handlers were returning back to the hotel late afternoon. The water work and breed show went smooth, hot and buggy but that's water work. After all were done with the days testing they returned to the hotel worn and exhausted and were finally able to relax that it was all over. The "Sears" boys were back again with the Beer Garden festivities and the parking lot was like a scene from the wild west movies minus the horses and guns! Handlers,Judges,Organizers,Spectators alike were all enjoying the fun and camaraderie of good ol Draht Folks.
The next morning and last day of the event was full of more activities. After breakfast there was a Seminar on breeding that had a good attendance and the Parade of Dogs was in the afternoon. It was a nice warm day, and the parade went great, all handlers were able to show off there dog and spectators were able to get a better look at each one. This same evening was the Awards Banquet also. The silent auction continued and all that attended were able to walk along and get a good look at the Prize Table. There was no absence of prizes at this table. We had a great collection from hunts,puppy's,dog houses,crates and kennels,blood tracking collars and leads, to rifles,safes and of course some Drahthaar Addiction Gear!
All the handlers were called up and given their awards and had a shot at picking a prize. It is nice to see the handlers being awarded and congratulated by the VDD board for all their hard work. Awards were given to some of the organizers including myself for service to the breed and organization. A very neat experience for something I enjoy doing very much!
I want to personally thank Matt and Zac for all their efforts on the Prize Table and collecting donations. Prizes were put together nicely and the table was full. Julie for her diligent work on the Armbruster program. There was alot involved in getting the ads to look right. Paul and his wife Diana did a fantastic job keeping the ball rolling and keeping order, Cal and Lee along with their spouses for their hard work on the meals and merchandise, and Lynn for keeping the test running smooth and without issues. It takes alot of know how to get things done like that. I know alot of people had their hands and time into this event and you are not forgotten. Thank You one and all for another great time and help along the way. Hope to see you all again next year!

Play Behavior and Dynamics

It's about time we discuss socialization,its importance, and play behavior. There are some people that may say this is all pointless talk. Those of us that have Drahthaars, that we have taught to be social, playful and well mannered dogs, would disagree I am sure.
Some see these as hunting dogs and that is all. Others see a hunting partner, home companion and travel buddy. Who wants to deal with a dog that doesn't get along well with other people or dogs? Either hunting or hanging around with others, it makes life a lot less stressful with a well mannered, socialized dog. All breeds need to be socialized. Some take to it with ease, some need coaxing, others need to be taught how to socialize and play appropriately. Drahthaars are one of those breeds that could use the extra help in the social department. They are high drive hunters with superb prey instincts. They work hard and are good at it too. They know it! Them knowing this tends to make most think in Alpha terms. They want to be the top dog, and choose not to engage in play and socializing. It is our job as handlers and owners to nip this in the bud. We are the alpha, we are in charge of everything! Appropriate play is important, when socializing your dog with other dogs, it is always best to have the other dog owners around and watching every move every second. Those that are experienced with dogs know exactly what the signs are, here is a little info and some tips.

Understanding social play behavior,dominant and nervous interaction will help in all aspects of handling your dog. There are basically play games that canines engage in.
The Hunt: A chasing game usually, one dog is acting "prey" and the other acting "hunter".
Most commonly the dogs will trade roles again and again. Often they will pause, check on each others emotional energy and verify that they are still "playing". You will most likely witness play bowing,body checks, faces are relaxed,"smiling", eyes are normal and not dilated. The acting "prey" may fall to the ground, allow themselves to be rolled to the ground,grabbed by the neck and play wrestle or fight. All this is acceptable play behaviour unless the roles never switch, you can see one dog getting to serious, barking or growling, baring teeth,playing to rough or not pausing. Once the other dog is frightened it will take on the persona of real prey with the tail tucked, eyes wide, shaking, running fast,etc. All signs it is time to intervene.
Play Wrestling or Fighting: Mostly fake posturing,wrestling,mouthing and noises, canines will chew on each other,mumble growls, one dog may be standing above another,flashing teeth, making noise. All is well as long as the dogs inhibit their bites, and no one appears frightened or like they are trying to escape.When this becomes to serious or a dog gets frightened, it is time to intervene. Most dogs enjoy interaction, dogs that are at play will show strong signals of such.
Play bowing, stretching,role switching in hunt or fight play, taking turns,pausing to check emotions and mumble growls . Usually dogs that are in proper play mode are easily interrupted. Play is basically just practice hunting and fighting, it can escalate quickly,every dog has their limits, so be aware.
Some inappropriate things to watch for include,chasing and stalking with teeth bared,placing or attempting to place a head on the other dogs shoulders,pushing or slamming into another dog, attempting to or humping and mounting, constant barking at another dog,moving in a direct path to other dog.
Most socialization issues can be easier dealt with in the puppy stage. Puppies learn how to communicate by engaging in play with other dogs.They may not understand at first and all dogs play at different levels and use different signals. From this pup's learn what is truly threatening and what is not. They learn politeness,confidence and social skills by being like the other dogs.
It is completely unreasonable and unfair to think all dogs will get along, but with a little help and some supervision, it is possible to make a dog understand the dynamics of play and socially acceptable behavior.

Racker

Racker came by for a short stay recently. He is a male Drahthaar from vom Elderbach.

He is about 7 months old, 60 pounds and a very energetic pup. He was fun to have and I think he left here having learned a few new things and hopefully a little happier. His owners are new to Drahthaar's and didn't quite know what they had on their hands until recently. Racker has been challenging their authority and not listening so well. Alot of it was the puppy in him, most of it was the lack of structure, that he required. This is common with first time DD owners. There is not a whole lot of info out there and not many people share the fact that...These dogs are not pets....

Yes, they make great companions by our side in the hunt and in the home, but they are trained and developed as young pups to be that way. If they are not shown the meaning of what is right and wrong to you, they will never understand their role.

This breed needs a ton of exercise,discipline and training that come hand in hand.They are born to hunt. That is what the breed is made for, the in home companion is a bonus deal. The discipline and activities must be in place for these dogs to adapt to what ever way we choose to "humanize" them. This is the same breed that was made to bay down pigs,track big game,fight off predators, retrieve all game furred or feathered, hunt field,forest and water till their paws bleed.

How can they be expected to be normal, calm, relaxed without proper discipline,structure and exercise? We love our dogs, you bet, but most were bred for a purpose....without that purpose in their lives, they can not be truly happy. By loving them, we should be giving them what they need. Right?

I was able to spend a few days with Racker. We got out into the field and water, went for searches and tossed bumpers. Put him on a few birds just for the exposure, awaken his senses so to speak. He listened to me well after a short bit and seemed to learn quickly all the things I exposed him to. Hessian and Racker had fun at home playing and Hess helped show Racker what "house manners" are. All in all I was impressed with Racker and his abilities. Given the proper structure, exercise,discipline and hunting activity he will be quite the partner to have around.

Best of luck to his owners, It is going to be alot of work and time,but it will pay off handsomely.

VGP Camping and Training

This month has been a fantastic training month! I have seen lots of different reactions to different levels of training on several different dogs. How lucky I am!

Met up with some local Addicts and 1 not so local Addict from Colorado. We took to the hills for some training and camping fun. Had a sweet little camp spot with a little open field and dense cover behind it, not to mention the pond that was there. (The one we all tried to keep our dogs out of and some of us were not so successful.) Good fun!!

We all have dogs preparing for the VGP, so forest work was definitely in order. Got a chance to work on all aspects of the test, especially my favorite...the Fox in the Box or Fox over Obstacle,

with some drags and of course Bloodtracking!

Training seems to be coming along well for everyone. It is interesting to see the other dogs and the progress they make. How different the issues we all have are. It's nice to see the other handlers and how they "tackle" each issue. Get and give opinions and advice, experiences we have had and things we have seen. Can't say 10 years ago, I would have thought for a second, about sitting in the woods around a campfire, having great food,great beverages,great conversation with great people, and it all being related to dogs. Our common interest and Addiction to Drahthaars has brought us here! For that I am happy and grateful.

Test day is not too far out now, with the Armbruster just ahead, it is about to get crazy busy around here. Soon we will be done with the testing and all work can focus to hunting now! I expect this is going to be a productive season! Happy Training!

Forest Frolicking!

Frolicking; (of animal or person) Play and move about cheerfully,excitedly or energetically.

In preparing for the "Big Show" or the VGP. The third and final test in the series of three breed tests. Hessian and I have been spending some time in the forest. Some of it has been training, and some has been reacquainting ourselves with the woods. I see a change in Hessian when we work the woods. It is different than the bird fields,duck ponds,bunny hunts and deserts. There is an abundance of game,large and small. Unique scents, only specific to the forest, and surely overwhelming to a animal whose sense of smell is 1 to 10 million times stronger. This change is instant, as if not already a high drive dog, he kicks into overdrive. He stands taller,breathes deeper,eyes wide and attention to detail in everything around him. He wants to go.go,go!!! Hunt em up,blast off and search in every direction,unfocused and relentless on finding the source of so many smells.

The difficulty as a hunter and trainer is, harnessing all that energy, calming the dog, as enough so it will obey and focus on the task at hand.Yet still work with that high intensity we enjoy from this breed. So I have been working on this,spending more time in the forest, conditioning him to understand the rules. Take it easy,relax and enjoy. There is no reward for being hasty,feral, and disobedient. Yet reap the rewards when focused,calm and upon reaching the agenda,getting to work and succeed. Hessian's greatest reward is being able to work,search,track,and produce. Now he is realizing he is unable to do any of that in an uncontrolled,unfocused manner.

Training is coming along well. Spending alot of time on obedience,blood tracking,and manner of retrieve. Still need to get in some water work and steadiness reminders. Of course its always hard not to worry and stress over a certain subject or two. I am anxious to get this test done and hopefully prize, so I can move on with plans to continue my Drahthaar Addiction!!

My apologies.....It has been a while since the last post. Things are picking up and getting busy!

It is training season once again and we have started working our way to VGP status. With the VJP tests out of the way, handlers are setting there eyes on the next test, the HZP, or looking ahead to the Armbruster. Time to get down the drags, blinds and water work, as well as get prepared for a breed show if headed the Armbruster path.

Those that are VGP training are already laying down blood tracks,drags, steadying up and rehashing some good old obedience work too. It is a great time of year as pups are being born and litters are being planned. There are going to be alot of new pups coming in next year and I am anticipating the turnout.

The Armbruster is around the corner and we are all working hard to gather donations, sponsors and help with the planning. If you want to be a part of this extraordinary event, please contact myself or one of the other board members with your information. We will need help in all areas of the event, so please, any help you can offer is of great support to the Wild West Chapter.

Hessian and Lola are getting ready for VGP. We have been keeping a steady pace with the drags, and blood work. As well as digging deep into the obedience areas of the test. We have been using raccoons instead of foxes on the drags because of the fact we have no foxes. Oh man are we in dire straits for some foxes. If you can lead me in the right direction or even have some that you want to sell or know someone who would, I know of a few of us who would go for it!

The blood work is coming along, Hessian had alot of practice last year with this subject so now I am making them harder, longer, less blood, older, gaps and fresh tracks along the way to follow his reaction and really make him concentrate. I have been slowing him down with special treats along the way and he is coming to a nice reasonable pace now.

Lola is doing well on her blood tracks, we are slowly aging them now that we are pushing them the full length. Although I must say the last track was on a really warm day in the desert, super dry conditions, 1/4 mile long and about 4 oz of blood and she did quite well. Not too mention the full length duck drag through a dry hard field and she nailed that too!

The next few months are going to be busy, preparing the Armbruster, training for the test, I have some boarders booked in already and Greta is coming for a stay to learn to "Fetch". It is going to get real fun around here! I will be sure to keep the blog updated with all the adventures.

VJP 2010

Went out to the VJP in Malta, Idaho to check out all the new pups and meet some first time owners and new members. It was a dry,hot, windy 3 days but fun regardless how crazy that sounds. The rabbits were scarce and scenting conditions were not so great. But all the dogs and handlers did well with what they had to work with. Met some new members and of course all the regulars were there. Some new apprentice judges this round as well as my chance to jump in as an emergency judge on the last day. It was good to gather around again, talking about training,testing and cheering each other on. I wonder if other Dogmen have the fun we do!

Special interest this year was to see the Barenwald pups and how they have come along. This was the first litter for Scott Doxey of Barenwald and they look good. Also testing was some of Jon Davis' Red Rock pups, who looked good too. One who my attention was focused on was Bella or Greta vom Red Rock. I know some of us were worried about the tracking a little bit, and she had only been on about 6 birds but she knocked my socks off and left the test grounds with a 69. I was pleased and impressed at the same time. Always fun to see the crew and new faces, I put together a video of the test and the test results can be seen on the Wild West Chapter website. Greta's Last Chance For Bunnies

This was the last weekend before the VJP test in Malta, Idaho, and I am still tripping out on the fact she needs to get on a live rabbit track. So Zac and I worked with Greta on Saturday and I decided to pick her up and try again on Sunday. Zac and I were able to work with her in the field, letting her search and working on field commands. We laid a drag and of course she nails it, bringing the rabbit to Zac's hand with pride. The spot we are using has a little water and Greta was interested in swimming and looking for ducks. I am so impressed with her natural hunting abilities, she is going to be quite the hunter! Hessian,Lola and Greta were able to run alot and get nice and tired so it ended up being a productive couple of hours. Fun as always,running dogs!

Sunday morning I woke with an overpowering need for a Drahthaar fix! It was supposed to be nice weather and ended up being cloudy and windy, so nothing fits better than a day in the field with some bearded dogs. Hessian and I loaded up and headed out to pick up Greta, then the 3 of us were on a mission for rabbits. Got out to a spot that we have gotten into rabbits before and began walking for how far or long I just didn't know. Finally an hour or so into our journey Hessian flushed up a cottontail! I commanded Hessian "down" and called Greta to me, took her over to where I saw the rabbit start and put her on the track. She could smell it good,because she was right on it! She followed the track well for the portion I had seen the rabbit run and kept her nose down and was very interested in the scent trail left behind. I called her and Hessian to me and we looked a little more. Sure enough about 20 minutes into it Hess flushes another, maybe the same, cottontail. Either way, I was stoked....I called Hessian and Greta to me, put Hessian in a down-stay and took Greta to the start of the track. Once again, with a snoot full, she was on it, winding through the exact brush I had pinpointed as the path the rabbit took. I followed her a bit because I was sure she would produce the rabbit if I could get down there fast enough to see. I never saw the rabbit again, but she was on it, and her desire was insane...at one point the check cord caught up in the brush and she was stuck, oh man she was pissed! She wanted to follow that scent and getting stuck was not ok with her, she fought and fought,by the time i got to her she had worked it loose and was on the trail again! As I have stated a few times before, her drive is amazing at 8 months old! Addiction satisfied.......for today.....but never cured!

We never ended up finding anymore rabbits, so we headed in. I feel better now knowing she was able to follow some fresh,live scent. Now all I can do is sit tight and wait till this coming weekend to watch the VJP and see her outcome. I will return with pics and a post for sure.

Greta's Visit

Greta (Bella) vom Red Rock boarded with us for about a week, and what an adventurous few days it was! Greta has a sweet disposition and has a full load of hunting abilities to offer already. She is full of drive and energy and just needs it to be focused in the right direction. I was willing and able to work with her on basic in house obedience and so we did. We worked on teaching and enforcing to her commands like; bed, down, sit, stay,come. She has a way of being a stubborn,hard headed, independent pooch who wants to be the center of attention. But with some firm,assertive,repetitive and well timed correction,she was becoming a well mannered girl in no time. Now to focus her hunting drive.....

In preparation for the VJP, which is a natural ability test, the idea is to awaken the natural instincts that this breed already has. Not really training, more like exposure and lots of it. However, the pup is being trained or conditioned as to what hunting commands it should understand as well as transferring the at home obedience to the field. It makes a handler more at ease and the test tasks smoother if they both have a general idea of what to do.

So we headed out to a favorite training and hunting spot to run through some basics. We checked up on Greta's search,gunfire soundness,pointing and tracking. She is listening better in the field and cooperating with game she finds, so no issues there really. Her tracking is nice, she understands the command to track and shows huge desire and will to find. She just will not give up and if she gets too turned around,she comes back to where she last had it and continues to find and follow the scent. The bummer is she has not been on any live rabbits, so we were hoping to flush up some during her search but it never happened. Nonetheless she is doing well on drags and I will get her on a rabbit or two before the test! Her search is growing, no issues with gunfire,and she pointed some chukar and waited for me to approach her, so other than the live rabbit track issue she is on the right path. I have one more weekend to work with her and then after that I will be spending the weekend in Malta,Idaho watching and waiting for the results.

Fun Run!

I had been boarding Jager for a short stay,the hounds were getting restless and it was a weekend so, we headed on out to let the dogs loose. Pretty much just having some fun this day, but always make time for some real dirty work too!

After the dogs had their fill of searching the place over we laid down some blood tracks to put each dog on. Lola got her chance first, blood is a new thing for her, we have not done alot with her yet and are working her into it more now. It is always neat to see the interest spark in a new dog. The way they desire to find whats at the end and how they get there. Each dog has its own style and the handler needs to watch his dog,feel his dog and learn to read his dog. It is not an easy thing to do or get accustomed to. Trying to follow a high drive dog through the trees and brush with a 30 foot lead dragging at your feet while watching your dog and the track ahead. Teaching the dog to not wander off track or not go too fast on the track and so so forth. From the beginning of the track it feels like a jumbled mess the first few times but, eventually it becomes natural to both dog and handler.

Lola did well on her track, slow but focused, self correcting when realizing she was off track. Desire to follow and find the prize at the end. She seems to understand the concept and works hard to reach the goal. Her desire to please and desire to hunt go hand in hand. You really cant ask for a better combination for a hunting companion. Slow and methodical with Zac in tow, we get to the end,Lola is lavished with praise and a little food reward and hangs out until we are ready to do the next dog. She is getting the hang of it indeed and we will be making each track longer,harder and older as she progresses. Good Girl!!

Hessian had his turn next on a long track with half the normal amount of blood. He is slowing down now and focusing on the track more. I am getting to know him better and read him better. The collar and lead I use seems to be helping me feel his movement when I am looking at the ground for sign of blood. I remember when I hardly had the chance to look for blood because he was pulling me so hard and fast I didn't stand a chance! We jumped a rabbit during the track and Hess was hot on its scent, I reminded him we were looking for blood and to my amazement he went back to looking for the blood. Back on track and successfully to the end. Good Boy!

Next up was Jager and boy is he ready! Always ready for action of any kind, Jager is like following a freight train through a crowded mall most the time. Taking out everything in his path to find the prize. But this was different.....he was curious,intrigued, and excited at the same time. He followed the track well, slow and trying to figure out what the new smell was and where it was leading. Amazing how different he was on blood, it just blows me away. It was a long track with not much blood and he did well. He lost focus a time or two and i would have to spark his interest in the track again. Once he would smell the blood again, with atta boys from me, he continued along to the end. It was nice to follow a slower dog through the trees and brush no doubt. Not fumbling with or tripping over the lead, and being able to actually see the blood was awesome. Now it's time to make the next track harder! Good Boy!!

Got together with the regular fella's for some training. We are trying to prepare Greta and her owner/handler Loren, for the VJP. We have gotten together a few times to try and get them both started off on the right foot. Unfortunately with the VJP only 2 weeks away, we haven't met up near enough.

Greta seems to be doing well regardless. Her search has really developed and she is getting out more. Loren has been working on the basic obedience stuff with her but she is still young and has alot to learn. No problems with gunfire, and the drags and blood we have put out for her really get her attention, she seems to track like a champ. We need to get her on a few more birds to see where she is at on pointing, and rabbits have been hard to come by once again.

A for sure disadvantage to owning a Drahthaar and living in the city is, having to drive over an hour to get into any type of game fields or training areas. Let alone the rabbit population is just not what it used to be. I will be boarding Greta for about a week or so and plan on working with her intensely to have her ready to roll. I am hoping to see the light turn on and really get her tracking down on some real jack rabbits if I have to drive the whole state.

VJP testing has already begun and Malta is coming next, there are test scores and pictures from the finished tests posted on the Wild West Chapter website for those interested.

Don't forget the Armbruster in Boise Idaho this year. Those successful in the VJP with a score of at least 65 are eligible! Happy training and see you in Malta!

Adopt Cabela?

At my work..Camp Bow Wow, we were fostering Cabella until she could be found a home.

Unfortunately anxiety had kicked in and she has been scratching and biting at her tail causing some trouble for her.

I was asked if i would take her for a week or so while she healed and give her an interview at my house with my dog Hessian and our boarding guest Jager. I of course agreed as we are looking for another canine in the home anyhow.

Cabella is a 5 year old Doberman with no crop on the ears or dock of the tail. She is full of life when she wants to be and moody German when she wants too! She didn't know what to think of these two wild boys at first, but she is coming around more each day. Especially when they are all outside, She seems to get a little more frisky then!

We are still not sure what her visit with us will bring for her future, but as with all adoptions we need to let her pick her family. Can't force a dog to be your friend or your dogs friend if they don't want to be.

Vbr Practice

We headed out to Farr West to meet up with Chad and try to see if we could get some practice in on a Vbr.

The Vbr is a test of tracking. In the process of hunting, if a furred animal (rabbit,fox etc) is wounded and able to travel about 300 yards. A dog that has not seen the rabbit is brought to the area of the shot and put on the track. The dog is then supposed to track the animal, find the animal, retrieve it and return it to the handlers hand. All in the sake of an ethical hunt.

This is just one of a many basic tasks for the Drahthaar that we all probably see occur as we are hunting. It is not so easy to get a judge to be with you during this event however. Take your judges hunting! That way if the opportunity arises you would be covered.

In the process, we thought we would try to get a clear answer on if our dogs were Loud on Fur.

The dog needs to be certified Loud on sight or smell before it can be eligible to participate in the 20/40 hour blood track or VsWP test.

Loud on sight or smell is when the dog gets vocal while chasing or tracking a furred game animal. I know Hessian is loud on pretty much anything he sees but it's always good to make sure before getting judges together for a certification. As well as the rest of us that want to VsWP that need to check as well.

In the VsWP test the bloodtrack is 1000 meters and uses 1/4 liter of blood and sets for at least 20 hours. As compared to the VGP bloodtrack that is 400 meters with the same amount of blood and only aged 2-5 hours for a day track and 14 hours for an overnight track. Quite the difference!

We got all the dogs out for a run and little swim and headed home. Thanks for the hospitality Chad and for getting us into some new country for us city boys!

Drahthaars Everywhere

I am boarding Jager for a few weeks and decided to head out to Lee Kay to exercise him and Hessian

It wasn't the most cooperative day as the weather goes but Draht's don't care, so neither shall I. We walked for an hour or so, as they searched up the fields and did some swimming. I tossed some bumpers and worked on some blinds and heeling as well. I just can't get enough of seeing these two dogs tear up the land in thier search for the prize. I have been lucky to have the opportunity to enjoy myself in this dog eat dog world. I hope the fun never stops!

As I was heading out the gate, I ran into a friend with his Lab and Draht, on thier way in for a run around the property. Seems like a few of us had the same idea in mind, because no sooner did I hop out of my truck to greet my friend, that a new pup owner pulled up too!

We hung out for a while and talked about dogs and training, did some work with the new pup Kaiser vom Wasatch (Pete). Did some drags, and searching as well as basic exposure type stuff.

It is always nice to meet new people and give advice and share stories of our experiences. Another chapter member and addict sucked into this Drahthaar Addiction!

Wild West Training Day

We did our best to throw together a chapter training day in American Fork on February 13th. With the help of a new member and his property, a few of us were able to get somewhat organized and get a few people together with thier dogs for training.
The main focus was explaining the VJP to members that will be running this spring and next. We wanted to make people aware what to expect and how to prepare for it. The property we used wasn't populated with rabbits so instead we opted to do some drags and chases.
We showed the handlers that giving the dog a sight chase or two before beginning the tracking helps make the dog more aware of the track and gives it more desire to track as well.
We did some drags and explained the purpose and how to use the slip lead for tracking. The pups did a good job of catching on and I think something was learned by the new members.
We also worked on some pointing and field searching as well. The dogs all seemed to catch on quickly as well as the handlers too.
Some of the older dogs were brought out to show how a finished dog works. They worked on drags, retrieving , pointing, searching and blood tracking too.
Everyone got to meet new people, the weather cooperated and we enjoyed a fantastic lunch!

Not A Drahthaar, but still Versatile...

Izzy the Weimaraner is looking for a good home. Never been trained to hunt but known to be a smart, loyal and versatile breed. Whether you choose to take this dog to train as a hunter or just a loyal family companion, i'm sure you will not be disappointed.......

Izzy will be 3 years old in April. She was attained from a breeder in Montana. Owners were given papers but never sent them in. She is mouse gray and has been spayed. The current owners are being blessed with a 6th child and feel that Izzy can not be given the attention she deserves and needs. They just want to see her go to an excellent home. She has never hunted but points mice and voles in the yard.

She is an active, affectionate dog looking for the same in return. Very obedient when consistent, good to walk or jog with, crate trained, Trained by Scott Minson ( a bomb dog trainer), good with children, loyal to family, gets along well with dogs, loves to be outside,trained to stay on tile floor.

As with any Weimeraner, she needs to be active, and a job to keep it occupied and out of trouble and should take very little training on in house manners.

Eik vom Felsengebirge‏ SOLD

Whelp date June 25th 2006. VJP-69, HZP-176, VGP prz. I 303.

Eik is a medium range dog. Easily kept close while hunting pheasants but will hunt out to 150 yards on sharptail or chukar. He has experience on Pheasants, chukar, huns, sharpies, forest grouse, doves, quail and waterfowl. I have shot more pheasants over his points than anything else but I would say he shines while hunting covey birds. Mainly because he will stand them from a distance.

He is also the best waterfowl dog I've ever owned (including 3 labs). He is calm and quiet in the blind and loves to retrieve. I have not had a chance to do any blood tracking since VGP but this was always something that Eik thoroughly enjoyed. He earned a 4 at his VGP in blood tracking. Eik was diagnosed as a carrier of von Willebrands on May 15th 2007, so there is no breeding potential. But if you're looking for a "Finished" drahthaar in his prime with tons of experience on wild birds then this may be the dog for you!

House Sitting and Jager's return!

Along with merchandise and training / boarding, I also do some house sitting too. Had a client going out of town for 10 days and unable to board the dogs. House sitting is always a nice option to have available for those clients who needs are more to that liking.

I watched over Busta, Lola and Roxy for the ten days. Arriving every morning to to take them for a little stroll around the block, back to home base for feeding and watering. Kept in the yard during the day and checking back a few times a day to play and make sure everything is running smooth. Some days when the weather was not so cooperative, they had to stay in. So I would visit more and play more to keep them tired and occupied until my next visit.

Busta is a Chocolate Red Nose PitBull Terrier, Lola was a mix and Roxy a chihuahua mix.

Great pooches, fun to take care of. Personalities of their own for sure.

Had a good time taking care of these canines, but then when don't I?

During the same time, Jager came back for another short visit! Always an adventure when Jager visits. Hessian and he are like brothers, the way they frolic and play. I love it! It makes for a busy 5 days, but gives Hessain something to do. Took Jager to get his x rays for Hip Dysplasia, as this is required for the Breed Show. No problem to me, it gave me a chance to head out to Ogden bay and run Hess plus get in a little training. Can not complain about that!

Well with Breed show coming up and training season around the corner, I imagine things are going to get busier. I can only hope! And with all the events coming up, I'm sure I will be posting again real soon!

New Year and Jager

The dog...not the liquor! Yep, Jager came back to stay over New Years! Always fun to see Jager! He has been described in our circle as A Bull In A China Shop. So much energy bursting out of this guy! I wish i could bottle it and sell it, i would be a millionaire.

Had a chance to get him out to some open country to run. Not sure of my thought process at the time but um....2 Draht's, well versed in hunting, and i go for a run? What the hell man, should of gone hunting! What was i thinking! Just watching Hessian and Jager work the same area together was fascinating. The 2 dogs that can't leave each other alone for 5 minutes, could care less now. Jager searching one side and Hess the other, both out in front, just can't help but notice any game in the area would be toast! Next time i will be going hunting!

Have a little time left to get on some ducks and some chukar, so i better get on it. Happy New Year and may all your Draht dreams come true in 2010!

Irish and German, Friends!

We had a visitor over the Christmas holiday, soft red furry thing, called Kenai. Yes, like the river in Alaska.

Kenai is an 11 month male old Irish Setter. Quite a looker and fun to have around. I know what your thinking...... that's not a Drahthaar! I know, but in the world of boarding and training that i have now stepped into, there are alot of breeds i imagine i will be posting about. Get used to it... i am getting to like this alot!

Back to Kenai, Irish Setters are known as a very outgoing, friendly and lively dogs. Usually never hostile and compatible with children and other pets. Usually active and playful through it's adulthood. Kenai was no exception! Hessian and Kenai had hours of fun, playing and resting and playing some more. I think Hessian just enjoys having the extra play mate around, he seems content frolicking around with who ever visits. I made sure to give Kenai lots of exercise and love and affection too.

Kenai's owner had mentioned that he was a bit hyper when company would come over, and they would have to lock him away so as to not go crazy and disturb the guests. He asked if i would work on that behaviour while he stayed with us. I had no problem with that, and as it was the holidays, i knew we would have lots of company. Over the 6 day stay with us i was able to get it under control pretty well. Kenai was allowed to say hello or smell hello and then he was told to get back to his bed. It took some repetition, but worked well. By the end he practically knew the routine. I instructed the owner of what i did and informed him to continue the process and hopefully that is coming along well.

Thanks for the visit Kenai. Hope to work with you more. Time to start working on some hunting!

Slushy Duck

Was able to get in on a duck hunt before everything froze over. This was a few weeks ago.

It was super cold and the water was just a thin layer of ice, and so we walked out to set up some decoys. Broke up the ice in the process and made ourselves a nice open water area. Made it look cozy to the passing ducks and before we knew it, they were all over!

We were able to get a couple Green heads and Mergansers and Gadwalls. All in all a cold slushee day but we were able to get into some ducks, the dog got to put in work, and we were done by noon. Great Day

I hope to get out a few more times if we can find some open water, then there's always making open water! That's always fun!!!

If not for ducks, we have till February to chase chukar, so why not, maybe my next post will be about a chukar hunt or 2.

Jager's Stay December 2009

Good ol Jager came to stay with us for about 4 days, and it makes me want another dog. It was fun having 2 dogs follow me around and to hear them playing in the yard. Like brothers, they want to wrestle and chase and go crazy in the snow. I think Hessian had fun too, even though he can be a bitter gus every once in while.

I thought just having them both around was enough to make me want another Draht, then i took them both out for some fresh air. We headed out towards Utah Lake, found an open field and let them have at it. Dog flying everywhere! It was awesome to watch them search together, separate but working to the same objective. Search, search , search. Then as we walk along I spot some Bunny tracks in the snow and without even a word both dogs are on separate tracks, nose down, tracking there hearts out. Although nothing was produced which was good as i was unarmed, it was still sweet bliss to watch them work.

Hmm, i really need to think this over....... ok... I'm ready!

Had fun Jager, see ya again in January!

Wow! I realized this morning that it had been a month since my last post! For this i am sorry.

I have seen alot of activity and thought i had better post something.

Since the Pheasant Derby i have been out hunting quite a bit. I have been out for ducks, geese, pheasant, chukar. I have not taken many photos lately. Concentrating mostly on enjoyment of the hunt and working the dog these days. There is a few months left in the hunting season and breed shows are around the corner not to mention time to start training for tests again. So i wanted to share some VJP and breed show articles as well as refer anyone interested to past posts of the subject.

As for our past adventures, duck hunting has been fun. More productive than years past along with the pheasants and chukar too. It has been a really fun hunting season so far. Now that i can focus on letting the dog work more and more. And getting that exposure too more and more. I think this exposure will really help out in the upcoming training for VGP. Hessian is still a ball of fire, but calming much more, understanding me alot more as i am him as well.

Took off out west in chase of chukar this weekend, took a couple pics, nothing too fancy but thought i should share. Never did find the birds, saw lots of sign, a few cottontails and some deer. So it wasn't a total waste....then again what day in God's country with family and a Drahthaar is?

Pheasant Derby 2009

Once again it was time for the annual Pheasant Derby at Wasatch Wings and Clay. Oh what a time it was! Better than last year for sure. Alot more prizes on the table this year. Good ones too. 2 shotguns, lots of Wasatch Wing and Clay Carhartt Jackets, memberships, hunts, clay shoots, gift cards and even a puppy. Mind it was no Drahthaar but a German Shorthair to train and hunt. I tried for it, but it wasn't my name that won. Oh well.. there will be others! There was a great turnout and my father in law and myself along with my trustee Drahthaar, Hessian had a blast!

Once the rooster flew and they yelled "Go", it was off to the races as everyone ran for their vehicle and headed to a spot to hunt. We got to our area quick as I had already planned the area I wanted to hunt. Luckily no one there yet so off we went. Took about a half hour of walking and Hessian searching and then it was Game On! We had our chance at quite a few roosters.

Mark, my father in law did most the shooting......It was my objective to show him a good time and my chance to really work my dog for some one who would enjoy it. I shot 2 birds, gave one to another hunter so i could continue the hunt with Mark. Kept on hunting, alot of shooting went on, birds would get missed and we would chase them down and get em the second time. A couple birds got wounded and then Hessian's tracking skills had to come into play. No problem, point track and retrieve baby!

Ended up that day with 8 roosters and a hen. What a fabulous hunt! Hessian did exactly as he was supposed to. Pointed, stayed steady for us to arrive and flush, steady to 3 shots or more, steady to fall. Took off like at rocket at "fetch", retrieve to hand! Awesome!!!

Can't wait till next year. Had a great time, made Mark happy, had dinner for two nights and shared with my parents and sisters family all the tasty pheasant. Be sure to watch Roughin it Outdoors Channel 2 or KUTV for more Saturday Nov 7th at 11:00 pm

Went out for a little duck hunting yesterday. Headed out to Ogden Bay with Biz. Got out there, walked for about a half hour - fourty minutes and found a spot to set up. Tossed out a half a dozen decoys and began the waiting game. Got quite a few pass overs, although most of them were just to high. It got a little better toward sundown, more ducks coming in our way, alot more looks and passes and Biz even called a few our way a couple times. We were able to get some shots fired off which always feels good but bagged no ducks this day. Next time, feathered friends, next time!

Why We Own Drahthaars

I wanted to share this story that was e mailed to me by fellow addict Kevin Quast. He received this an email with the same title as this post, from his good friend Dave Swanson.

Kevin had forwarded this on to me and it really caught my attention. Those of you who know and understand my passion for this breed understand I am a firm believer in using this breed for every purpose it was made for. I thought you might like to hear about the buck Franky & I recovered last night (Monday, Oct. 26, 2009). My friend shot him at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. We started the track at 2 p.m. Monday and found him about 3:30 p.m. Total estimated distance was 1/2 mile. The first 400 yards of the track was through a nice clean oak stand, and we found plenty of blood. The next 300 yards or so was through a swamp with calf-deep water but plenty of swamp grass for scenting. Blood was spotted only about every 20 to 30 yards. Franky took me to the edge of a swollen creek to deep for us to cross, and we found blood where I assumed the buck stood before crossing. We stood at the edge of the water where I took off the leash and gave Franky a fetch command. He swam across went to the east about 10 yards, restarted himself and went to the north about the same distance, came back and restarted himself again -- this time with his nose glued to the ground heading west. Franky was gone for about minute, and I heard a bark. I told my friend Jon he found the buck. We headed to where Jon knew of a bridge to cross and found the buck about another 100 yards from where Franky crossed the creek and right where he had tracked him and barked. The deer weighed 209 lbs and rough scored 153 inches with a 19 1/2 inch inside spread. This was by far the most exciting track I have ever went on.

Utah Gambling?

No I am not having a casino party......Although that does sound pretty fun! Or maybe you were thinking Quail when you read the title....But no, I am not talking about that either.

I am actually talking about my recent trip out to Wasatch Wings and Clay. To appease my hunting urge, i decided to drive 45 minutes away from home and bang a couple birds. Little did i forget my shooting skills are not so up to par! Therefore the gambling.... Hessian did his job fine, it was a day on the warm side for sure. High 70's, and it didn't take long for Hess to wear down but in the meantime i had shot one hen and watched 2 roosters fly in to cover down below. We headed back to the truck for a little break and started over.

We headed back out, for the one hen i knew we had not seen yet, and within minutes Hess locked up and watched as i flushed the bird and shot....Down it went..Fetch! Mission 1 complete.

Time to chase down those 2 Roosters i had seen. It is cooling off now, the wind is blowing good now and we are off. Within a few minutes the wind got real gusty and Hessian is acting real birdy. He is tracking alot and stopping, relocating, like he was trying to pin a bird. Then Bam! He's locked hard! I rush over and sure enough theres a Rooster, Kick, Flush, Click.....Click? No Not click.....Bang.... RELOAD! OK......Bang!!!! Fly away...fly away rooster!!!!

That about summed it up. That bird was not landing soon and was gone away now. We looked for a while longer for the last rooster to no avail. Not sure where he went off to, but it wasn't in my game pack.

All in a few hours we had enjoyed ourselves and the time outdoors. Shot a couple birds and got dinner for one night.Not bad. Wasatch Wings has always been a fun little place, Its alot closer than Wendover if ya need a gamble!

New Puppy

Oh no.....someone has themselves a new pup! Zac's friend ,Loren, was looking for a hunting dog and liked what he had seen in Lola and Hessian and began his search for a Drahthaar. Starting doing his research and with Zac's help was on his way to Vernal to pick up a pup from Jon Davis at vom Red Rock. He has only had her a few weeks now but Greta ( Bella) vom Red Rock seems very comfortable. The new owners seem delighted as well. Hessian and Lola didn't seem to be too bothered by her either. They pretty much just went on about there business, curious but uninvolved. I can't wait to continue my addiction with this pup. I'm sure we will be spending alot of time with giving lots of exposure and preparing her for her journey as a hunting and family companion.

I am still planning to put together some training days for all the new puppy owners and owners of new puppies. Lets get together and help each other out, so the breed can continue to develop and be the best it can be. Contact me if you are interested and have not yet heard from me, and as for all the other guys that i know, real well, that have puppies, lets get rolling, i have heard your interest in doing something like this so don't back out now, lets set some dates. lLet me know what works or doesn't work for you.

Duck Hunt Opener 2009

So upset i missed the actual opening morning as i had to work that day, I suppose we all know that pain, but life goes on!
Made it out on Sunday for what was my duck opener. Went out to the Mac's duck club and what a time we had!
First i must say i have never shot so much on a duck hunt! That was real. There were so many ducks around i had to play like a statue most the time to keep from scaring them away. I must not be very good at staying still cuz they saw me or the dog move a few times and changed their flight path. Hunted out of a sink box style blind for my first time. That was interesting. A little,maybe 5x5 concrete bunker permanently built into the swamp that sits about 10 inches above the water. Talk about weird. Out in the middle of the water, waiting, dog laying on top with a camo hoodie draped over him. Even Hessian didn't know what to think.
That was the morning hunt. Then it was time for lunch and cocktails at the local bar. Yes there is a bar nearby, duh. Ha good times good food, got warm and dry and headed back to the club. Rested up another hour or so and hit it again. This time in an above water blind. More good times, just not so great shooting. Man i need some practice on ducks. Either trying to shoot too far out of range, or not leading them enough. Either way i need practice.....
All in all Hessian did well. We need to hunt like this more so he can get the hang of it. Had a few hang ups in the retrieves through decoys but we worked it out. I think he enjoyed it, I know i did.

Now it is off to Wyoming for the Armbruster. Going to watch some Drahthaars in action from all over the country and meet some Germans. In the meantime doing some hunting in Nebraska!!

HZP Logan 2009

Last time in Logan for testing this year. Went out to witness and participate in the HZP. The second of the 3 breed tests that we do as members of the VDD to look over the fine quality’s of our dogs. I went out to support a few local guys I have trained with all summer as I prepped Hessian for the VGP. Not to mention root for all other handlers that decided to test their wits, most for the first time. I myself was a second time runner,as I chose to handle Jager(Harley) vom Wasatch. A high drive dog with a lot of power that actually belongs to Mac, but he let me do the testing so he could enjoy his hunts and give me more experience!
I hadn’t spent much time with Jager in training. Only been out with him a few times, worked on some water work a bit, about 3 drags, 5 shot bird retrieves, and maybe 10 birds worth of pointing. Not a lot when it comes to how much time people put into training for the HZP. I think a lot of what Jager had to offer was his extra amount of exposure. Mac is a big hunter and gets out a lot too. I think that Jagers time spent out at the duck club and Utah Lake gave him just the edge he needed for this test. His amount of drive doesn’t hurt either!
It sure makes things a lot easier when there is no pressure to impress anyone, but found myself getting a little nervous never the less. No matter what there is always those things that make you nervous as you work your way to the end. I had a great time running Jager, he surprised the hell out of me and I’m sure a few others! I learned some more as a handler and feel good about it all. I would seriously consider handling Jager in VGP if it is an option,.....Mac? It just goes to show the true natural versatile ability of the Deutsch-Drahthaar. I could really get used to this kind of thing. I enjoy these dogs so much and although the training and testing is such hard work it is sure worth it and makes for one super great hunting companion.
My partners in crime from the valley did well. Zac and Lola (Ice) vom Wasatch pulled it off even with how nerve racked Zac was. Lola did a great job on all aspects of this test. Such a happy high drive dog. Still a lot of puppy, you have come along way Zac. I think you may be really figuring her out. Got one super dog and worked out an awesome score, coming out with a 182! Time to enjoy hunting this fall and when the snow melts we will be at it again to prepare for VGP!
Nik (Hank) vom Wasatch did a good job too. He completed every task he needed to, just had a hiccup on the rabbit drag, which unfortunately is one of the most important tasks in this test. It is the one thing that really gets to some dogs and there handlers. Not sure if Nik ever failed a drag in training but one thing I have realized is..... they need to. The dog most definitely needs to learn it MUST bring the rabbit to the handler. Still had some great scores on all other areas and I have seen Nik and Ron come along away over the last year. Regardless of any outcome they will make one great hunting team.
Glad to hear our new friend and fellow addict Kevin made it through with a 178….Wish we could of stayed to watch Archie do his thing,but imagine it all went well. Nice to meet you Kevin and keep it up. Armbruster just ahead man. See you there!
Congratulations to everyone. It is not an easy test. It takes a lot of work and dedication to even get this far. I commend all of you. Thanks again to all judges for the hard work. I think we should hold a clay shoot for the Chapter though! Some practice is needed by all…no?

Grouse Hunting and HZP Preparation

Headed out to the Uintahs to chase after some grouse. A well deserved trip for me and Hessian as we just made it through the VGP. Not Prizing, but made it through. Training had been rigorous over the past few months and with the testing over for us this year I decided to get to hunting.After all that is what he is for!

So Biz,Hess and I went to the area we had been doing some forest work training and had actually seen grouse during that time. It is full of downed timber, lots of water and green wet vegetation. Just no grouse! Where o where art thou? It was the opener this weekend so maybe some one got there before we did. Never less it was nice to get out with no pressure from anything.

We hiked 4 miles with no luck but got some pics and watched a storm roll our way from atop mountain...what a site! I just love this area, it is always so gorgeous and full of beauty. Well maybe next trip we can bag some Ruff's or Blue's.

In the meantime I have signed up to run Jager (Harley)vom Wasatch through the HZP in Logan Utah this coming weekend. I am really curious to see how this will go as I have not spent very much time with him to prepare for this test. He is alot of puppy still, wild and full of energy that never dies. Sometimes he loses focus on the task at hand but during training yesterday was very impressive. That is one thing great about this breed, the fact of the natural versatile ability is just fantastic! We put down a rabbit drag for him that went very well. He pointed a pigeon he found hanging out by the trucks. Had an excellent point on a Chukar that was planted for him. Did some blind retrieve work, needs a little more direction here because his search is so big, but either way he finds it and brings it back. Going to finish up with him this week, just need to do a little more and it will be test day.

Lola (Ice) vom Wasatch is really coming along great from what I saw last night. She is getting in some good points, took the drag like a champ! She is really coming together to be one hell of a hunter! Good work Zac! Almost here bro, it will be over soon and you ca breathe and sleep again!

Haven't seen to much of Nik (Hank) vom Wasatch lately but hope all is going well. Test day is right around the corner for all of us! Oh boy just can't get enough! Get ready to hunt boys! Testing is almost over!

VGP 2009

The VGP test is finally over in these neck of the woods. It was 6 months of straight training trying to get Hessian and myself ready for this test. It really is the test of all tests. It includes Forest work,Field work,Water work and Obedience. All inclusive is Bloodtracking,Retrieving Fox over Obstacle,Fox and Rabbit drags including retrieving,Independent Forest Search, Dense cover search w/handler,Independent Water search,Gunshot soundness in water,Blind water retrieve in dense cover,Search for wounded duck,Retrieving of duck,Field Search, Pointing,Manners behind game,Feathered game drag,Search for fresh shot bird,Retrieving of feathered game,General Obedience,Drive hunt obedience,Heeling on and off lead,Down Stay with gunfire,Steadiness to wing and shot. Not to mention the manner of retrieve is judged on all retrieves.

It is no easy task and takes alot of work and dedication to get these dogs to where they need to be. My congratulations go to the 7 of 8 dogs who passed this test in Logan this weekend. Good Job you guys, you really made it! Time to enjoy the hunting season and your dog as you are done with testing. Except for maybe the few that are participating in the Armbruster next month.

Now lets discuss the ONE dog that didn't pass............ Ya unfortunately that is yours truly! I know i know...what happened? We worked really hard to make sure Hessian was prepared for all aspects of the test. In all our training i thought we had it for sure. Hessian scored 257 points but no prize....We were 4 points shy on obedience!

Well obedience got me! Hessian had a sloppy off lead heel, he wanted to heel with the judge in front of me at times as well as catching a scent on the ground and wanting to follow that, zigged when he should of zagged too. He moved a little on the Down Stay and the Drive Hunt once the gunshots went off. He really wanted to go see what everyone was shooting at! These are the things that ruined my chance to Prize and Pass this test.

A few quick tips for everyone....when teaching heel to your dog, do not allow the dog to sniff the ground, keep it's head up and correct any pulling away or sniffing the ground on or off lead. it makes that big of a difference trust me.

Also practice making your dog Down and Stay with you walking away and disappearing. Fire gun shots, yell, make lots of noise. Correct any movement or barking or whining. This too added to my demise.

I feel good that we made it to the end! We completed all tasks. We made it all the way to the end of the test. It was just points that hurt us and stopped us from passing.I will be back next year, you can count on that!

Unfortunately i don't think there is a puppy in my future this spring, as Hessian needed to pass this test for that to happen. All is well as I can concentrate more on Hessian and hunting.

Again Congrats to all handlers and dogs. Great Job guys!

I want to say thank you to all the Judges and test coordinators and directors. The judging groups were great guys. Very helpful and very informative. Never left me wondering on anything. Gave everyone an equal and fair chance to do what needed to be done. Also helped to ease the handlers in what is one stressfull time. Thanks again everyone.

I will be posting more on the VGP. I am working on a Slideshow as soon as i have all the pictures together. So keep watching for that. This post was just much needed as i know everyone wants to know the update!

VGP,HZP,Drahts and Brats

It has been quite the eventful couple of weeks preparing for the VGP. Apparently not eventful enough, as I took on preparing another dog and running in an HZP as well. I have been working with Jager vom Wasatch very little as I prepare for the VGP.
He is quite the little ball of fire! Young and full of energy. I remember Hessian at that age being just as wild and crazy.
I am excited to see how Jager will do at the HZP, with not near the amount of attention to detail as most of the dogs that run the test. Figured why not, do it to give myself the experience of running another HZP and experience working with another dog. It has been exciting and only a few short weeks to go!
With that I spent a day out with two others prepping for the HZP doing water work and field work and getting Hessian in on the action as well seeing how he does it all again in the VGP. That day was also the 1st Annual Drahthaar Addiction Draht’s and Brat’s training day. We all did some water work and some pointing. Moved on to grilling up some tasty brat’s and kicked back for a tasty lunch. We ended up our day with some drag work and called it good. It is funny how you can simply over train yourself and I think your dog too. We all have been working so hard to prove to ourselves that we can get it all done, but in the end always have something we should have worked on little more. It definitely is a chore training but worth it in the end. Imagine a year and a half old dog, retrieving all your small game! Swimming out for waterfowl, or tracking down a wounded rabbit or such to retrieve. Pointing out pheasants, chukars etc. and retrieving those to hand as well.
Even better, we all want to hunt ethically and have to admit searching the reeds or thick brush for that wounded bird to be disappointed upon not finding it. Not any more and with a young dog! Oh what can be done with even more training? I am in the process of finding that one out as I prepare for the VGP in the ultimate test of the finished dog.
I don’t think that Hessian is at all finished or broke to the point he should be for this test but I’m all in now. I feel good about the water work in all. Retrieving is not as methodical as I would like. The presentation isn’t superb but he gets it done. Searching water field and forest is great. Lots of energy and drive. Obedience is coming along good. Heeling is better. Drive hunt and down stay is a lot better too. Blood tracking was coming along nice until a few weeks ago. I didn’t trust my dog and took him off track when he was just working hard to find it. I have a done a couple since and we are clicking better but I can’t slow him down much more. I hope it’s not too fast for the judges. Been working real hard on the steadiness and that is coming along well so far. Seems we are pointing nice and steady to flush. Steady to shot so far but only worked on very few birds need more practice for sure. It all comes down to training and I think maybe I have over trained in a way. I think Hessian is getting bored with all of it and ready to move on. Suddenly he is doing weird things during training that I just can’t explain. All I can think is that the training is getting old and not as fun as it used to be. I know I am sure ready to take a breather and do some hunting. I am getting one hunt in this week. I think I can use this as an opportunity to focus on some steadiness; blind retrieves of fresh shot bird and even down stay and such too. Maybe I can find a rabbit or two, as we all need them for training and test day too. I hope all goes well in this last test. It is super hard and I took off all winter and last spring of training and used last fall and winter to build bad habits while hunting. I have had to try to work out the kinks now and it has not been easy. It will all be worth it in the end though. Either way I have one hell of a hunting dog, and I can be proud of that!

I could do with another pup. I would sure do things differently. I have learned a lot about this breed and what it takes to get a dog prepared to the standards it has acquired. I just have one more test. The VGP to pass, and it is on! I am looking forward to working with a new pup of my own. There are alot of things i would do differently now. Matt Norman from Vom Coldwater Canyon likes what he sees in Hessian so we are planning on this match up to have pups on the ground in February!

Lola's Blind Retrieves

Just watch Lola go.........2 weeks ago she was hesitant to go in the water on just a command. She always wanted to see the fall. Well 2 weeks later she'll jump right in on the "fetch" command!

We headed out to Lee Kay (of course) for some training last night. Had to work with both Hessian and Lola on some test related subjects. Zac was a little hesitant at first when i started walking to the other side of the pond to toss a frozen duck or 2. Wasn't positive she would do it. Well to his surprise, she nailed it! These were farther than she had ever done before and hard. These were nestled in some good cover. She jumps in the water and starts her quest. She needed a little help on the way back, with ONE command to "come". Thats all she gets, no problem,she comes in and deliveres duck to hand! We did 3 of these and she shined on every one!

We worked on the Gun Sensitivity in water. That too went well. She heads right out for the duck, i fire at the duck, she stops for 1 second to stare at the duck and keeps on going. We need to do some more of this, as this was really only number 2 for her.

This is where the story gets good. If you know anything about Lola then you know that rumor has it " she doesn't like rabbits". This has affected her tracking scores. So we are on a mission now to change all that. This is a dog that hasn't seen one drag since VJP training. No drags during the FF training. No drags since completing FF. So we did 3. The first one was off. Zac showed her the start...."suk,suk,suk"....releases the slip lead and off she goes. Ignoring the track and finding my return scent,followed that to the rabbit. Got reminded once to fetch and here she comes,delivering rabbit to hand.Next drag, i placed two markers. One for the start of the track, the second marker was for Zac. He started her on the track and walked with her on the sliplead to the second marker and then released her. She followed for a minute than ventured off, only to be called back and restarted again. Much better this time, except a little cheating. Again picking up my scent and finding the rabbit. One reminder to fetch and again rabbit in hand.

So number three is a little different. 2 markers, one for the start and one for Zac to walk with her to and then release her. Up to the line, command given, her nose is down she's pulling Zac along the track. Second marker, Zac releases her on her own. She follows the track a few yards, bails off it,sniffs around a bush, begins to go into search mode...........then suddenly, she whips around, nose back down, finds the track again and follows to the end where the rabbit is placed. Without any hesitation or reminders she picked the rabbit up and delivered to Zac! Hell Ya!

We did a little field search with her, fired a couple shots during. Did a fresh shot bird,blind retrieve on land scenario. She nailed it all. She is becoming quite the superstar. It is always nice to see the light really come on, especially when the dog is so amped and ready to do it all.

Did some water work and steadiness work with Hessian but this is Lolas post so i will post on Hessians progress another time.

Wild West Chapter Meeting.

Good times up Logan Canyon for the Wild West Chapter Meeting. The meeting was held in a nice area, with river nearby and lots of wide open country to roam and train. We arrived Friday afternoon to a few trucks, trailers and smiling faces. Not to mention a few Drahts! Most of the camp was out working on the VGP essentials that day and from the sounds of it were pretty satisfied with the overall outlook of how it turned out. A lot of chit chat and “dog talk” went on and I was able to purchase a few T shirts with a VDD-GNA WILD WEST CHAPTER logo! They will soon be available on the upcoming chapter website and I can link you there soon. For now these are available by contacting me and I can steer you in the right direction or give you price info etc. After shopping I went with Mike and Scott to lay a blood track for Scott’s dog Gracie, who passed her VGP last year with an exceptional performance and mothered a litter of fine looking pups! There are some pictures of those pups included in this post. Thanks to Gil and John we had a fantastic Dutch oven feast with chicken and potatoes and all the fixins’. Even had some tasty peach, apple, and cherry chocolate (I think) cobblers. Then it was meeting time. We discussed last years meeting and where we have come from there. Planned out some dates for tests and breed shows, discussed the new chapter merchandise and plans for more. We talked about the upcoming Armbruster and how we can help out. I am exciting to be planning on attending as a spectator and volunteer any way I can. I encourage anyone who can, to get involved and see what it’s all about. It was time to elect new Chapter Board members; Shane and Phil had been doing it a long time and were ready to pass the torch. Paul Trout is the new Chairman, and I the new Business Manager. Cal Bambrough maintains Breed Warden and Jason Wilde Vice Chairman. I look forward to working with these guys and learning alot from them.Congrats guys! There was quite a bit that was discussed that evening but I have been sworn to secrecy by an ancient German code and must remain silent! : ) Some gathered together to talk and mingle more, others sat back and enjoyed a late Mountain Matinee of the film “Taken”. Some of us, knowing we would have an early and long day ahead, hit the tent for a slumber. The next morning, we woke up early and headed out to the VGP testing site to run through some forest work. We worked on blood tracking of course, fox in the box, and drive hunt. Went back and was treated to a great breakfast thanks to Gil and John once again. Dogs were evaluated on the coat and confirmation to prepare for the Armbruster. Some went to the nearby pond and worked on water retrieves. Always fun for the pooch on a hot day. We went back up to the hills to put our dogs on track. Matt and Chad did theirs, and all seemed to go well. Mike had laid a track for me, so this was my first blind track! I had know idea where it was or went……I had to actually trust my dog to get me to the end with no help from me? ! Oh no! Put Hessian on the track and off we went. Mike trailed behind for fun and Hessian led us through the forest. Along the way I was able to actually spot blood. Something that is hard to find when you know it should be there, but easier to find when you trust your dog! Made it to the end, all on the dog. Imagine that! Mike said we followed the track along just fine. I felt real good walking away from that one! That was the end of that. Camp was packed up and the only destination now was home. The rest of the crew headed down to the HZP testing area to evaluate the dogs for the Armbruster, and then home from there. Thanks guys for helping out with the training. Great job to everyone involved in planning and attending the meeting! Can’t wait till next year. I should stop now, this is a long winded post! Enjoy the puppy pics.

Talking 27 Hour old Blood track!!!

Time to talk about some blood tracking! One of the funnest things I have had the experience to train for would have to be the blood tracking. It is fascinating to me that you can take an upland and waterfowl dog and track big game that has been wounded. In the VGP test the blood track is 400 meters, 200 more are added for those that want to send the dog on a free track after the initial 400. This is for dead game guiding and baying. The amount of blood used is 8 oz and a little more for the extra 200-meter work if deciding to do that. It will be a squirting or dabbing method. As of now I use a drip method from a Bug Juice bottle. The track is aged for at least 14 hours for overnight testing and 2-5 hours for a day track test. I am planning for the day track so most of my tracks have been aged 3 to 7 hours so far. In my training I have been using a Bug Juice bottle to lay blood, Orange painted clothes pins to mark the trail for me, a storage bowl with dog food in it and a biscuit, placed inside a 3 gallon bucket that has an Elk Hide strapped to it. I lay the track and mark it as I walk along. Making sure to place blood on fallen timber, rocks etc along the way. I leave the bucket with the hide and the food behind and sometimes place the Bug Juice bottle in the bucket as well so I don’t carry it back to the truck and contaminate the track. Now lets get into my last experience…….The 27-Hour-Old Blood Track in Colorado! Aright! So in Colorado and doing some training with Hessian and Jaeger. Decided I wanted to do an overnight blood track to test Hessian and myself. I grab my gear all stated above and head into the woods. I mark the starting wound bed and progress along my way dripping blood and marking the way. As I am going along I realize I am getting closer to a drop-off edge so I decide to turn around and stopped laying blood until I reached my turn off and then continued on from there. So now I have like a T pattern where the one end is a dead end. I continue along the way putting I some turns and such. I reach the end,1/4 mile later and bungee the bucket to a small pine and head out of the woods.It is Noon. Track laid time to wait. It rained a bit that afternoon, not for long but hard. I wasn’t able to get to the track until 3 o clock the next day. A 27-hour-old track! Got Hess to the start, downed him, walked up and took a look at the starting wound bed, went back to Hess, slipped on the collar and lead, pointed to the blood on the ground, “BLOOD, BLOOD”, “Find the Buck”. Off we go, Hess is nose down and pulling me along the way. He is getting slower. He starts off hard but slows down after a few minutes and focuses on the track. We are moving along well. Remember my T, the dead end? Well, Hess followed the trail right up to the dead end and I let him, after all there was blood there. Got to the end and realized this was not the direction, Hess turned around, nose down and headed back out to the split off point. Found the track and continued along in the forward direction. Moving along, just pass the first wound bed, we pass a log that I had placed blood on. This log had been freshly disturbed, dug at, tore into. Hmm, I don’t remember it looking like that. Suddenly Hess just stops, lifts his head and begins looking around. Very amped, not wanting to put nose to ground at all. Wants to take me for a search. So I down him on the blood and wait about 5 minutes, getting him to settle down and focus. Back on track moving along, getting close to the end. We come out of the trees and into a small clearing and there is the end! Hess took me there in 50 minutes! We made it! Time to reward! Wait a minute…….Where is my bucket? I placed it right here. Hess is freaking out. Sniffing around, won’t stop fidgeting. Won’t lie down. Finally “PLATZ”. Hess is down. I began to look around a little and find the shredded Bug Juice bottle a few feet from the end of the track, chewed to bits. Spotted my bucket a few yards down the hill. Bungee off, hide gone, bowl and food gone, and teeth marks in the bucket! Released Hess and we are out of here! About 20 yards down the hill Hess finds the elk hide and delivered to hand. I looked around for a bit, never found the food bowl or any sign of it. Did see what looked to be cat paws. Big cat paws. No gun, I’m outta here! Headed out of the woods, back to the truck and feel better now. No wonder Hess was freaking out! We could have run right into that thing! Everyone I talked to that day swears it was a mountain lion. And that it was still around and that we probably spooked it coming up on the end of the track. I am just glad we didn’t see it, and super stoked that He found the end of the 27-Hour-old track. The longest and hardest of all so far. WHAT EXCITEMENT!!!!!!! I LOVE THIS TRAINING THING! MORE AND MORE ADDICTED WITH EVERY NEW EXPERIENCE. Good luck all. And watch your back on the blood trail.

Jager's stay at DA and Meeker Colorado trip

It has been a very busy and interesting few days. We had Jager vom Wasatch for 5 days as well as took off to Meeker, Colorado to visit some family over the 4th weekend. Had great time in a small little river town. Enjoyed the family, had great wilderness areas to play with and train the dogs. Met a lot of nice people, did some fishing and some floated the White River. Got to enjoy a parade that involved my nephews family and one heck of a fireworks show that puts the big city to shame! Thanks for the great time Nephew! Can’t wait to come again real soon. Great little town to get away to any time the big city gets too much. Had tons of fun with Jager and Hessian, I think Hess enjoys the company every so often. It takes a little of the heat off him for a few days. I let them run around quite a bit in the Colorado forest. Worked with Jager on some fetch work, sending him to piles and blind retrieves. He does a fine job, gets the idea well, keeps searching and searching until he finds the bumper. Worked a little on holding some fur with a coyote pelt my nephew hooked me up with. Both dogs did some swimming and a lot of searching. Jager found a burr bush at full speed, as if he knows any other speed. Hit it so hard he tumbled in it and burrs were all over him. He is so furry that his eye was burred shut! Thankful for the 50 cent comb that works great to remove them without losing or ripping out too much hair. Did some bloodtracking work with Hessian that ended to be a very interesting experience and a close call, more to come on that later. In the meantime enjoy the pics of the dogs, the mini horse and the parade. Had fun Jager, would do it again anytime.

The All Black Crew

Hooked up with Mike Ballard and Chad Jones on Saturday for a little training. Pretty fun time. Mike had alot of advice for Zac and I and really gave Zac some insight on training / teaching a dog what you want it to do. We have started noticing Lola is a little softer than most so they took a different approach to the Force Fetch training. Seems she was just getting confused but with a little helping hand from Mike and a pretty cool technique she was Fetching away with some enthusiasm.
Zac has been working with her in a familiar area now trying to fool proof her first then we will move on to distractions. Thanks Mike
Talking with Mike and Chad was a good time. Really dig the chain gang, that will be my next project.

New Dog Box

Oh boy! Got a new toy! The addiction has grabbed me again! For those of you that know me well enough probably know about my headaches with crates and Hessian. See crates don’t hold that dog when he sees me walking away with a bag of birds, dead fur or even another dog. He has always wanted part of the action! Last time he busted out while we were out laying a bloodtrack, I got on him pretty hard for that one and he hasn’t done it since but it has always been on the back of my mind, so I have been looking around for a metal truck box. Come to find out, someone heard my cries and posted a Owens Hunter Series Two Dog Box for sale on Utah Bird Dogs forum. Luckily Zac spotted it for me and let me know right away! We looked into it, really liked the price, so I headed on out to Payson, Ut Tuesday and picked up Hessians new home on the road! Awesome! I couldn’t be more excited! Got home and after dinner got to work to build a shelf to set it on. Storage below and dogs above. 2 dog box????? I need another dog now! UH OH!!!!!!!

Training with Breeder Vom Wasatch

Met up with Shane Loveland of Vom Wasatch for some training with Zac and Ron. Two guys that have a Wasatch pup each. Everyone is currently working on Force Fetch at this moment so we decided to get together for a little lesson. Shane had five of his dogs with him. Diva, Britt, Fee, Hattie...all Wasatch and Boss vom Wilde. I could be wrong about a name or two...Sorry Shane its hard to get it all right! Any way we did some water work with Shanes dogs and then sat back and watched Lola and Nik do theirs. Shane would give some helpful pointers and they would try it again. Always fascinating to see a dog progress right in front of your own eyes! Always nice to get with the breeders and judges to get opinions and insight into everything we work so hard at trying to perfect. Great time Shane, thanks alot. You helped us all. We really need to do that some more.
Well i am thinking about possibly going up to Logan Canyon to do some training this weekend. I will post an update of our training after that.

Bloodtrack Training in the Snow? Why Not?!

This was an interesting Sunday in the mountains this training session. I and helper Biz headed out once again to the Uintahs to get some training done. We had intentions of working with Hessian and getting some fishing done. We put down a 430-meter blood track during a light snow. As we progressed along our track we came across a lot of snow and runoff. That didn’t stop us as we progressed along, dropping blood along the way. In the snow, on rocks, on logs, and even placed droplets in the sections of runoff we walked through. I am new to all this but it seemed like this was going to be hard track. The snow on the ground in places and the snow falling had to surely hamper Hessians ability to find the end of this track. Done laying the track we decided to hit the lake and wet a line. Did some “Down” and “Platz” by the lake as we were fishing. It was about 40 degrees maybe and still snowing. Matter of fact the snow never quit. He would whine a little and get in trouble and after a while just gave up on the whining all together. We caught a few little fish, Hessian got to hold and play with one and it was cold. It had been 4 hours since we finished laying the blood track. Headed back to the truck to warm up, dry off and build our stamina for what I was expecting a long track. It has now been 4 ½ hours the blood trail has been down. It is wet and been snowing all day. Not really sticking to the ground but has definitely moistened the ground and our blood track significantly. Never the less this has got to be done. At the start of the track I was able to see some blood so I started him on that. Along we went, I didn’t see much blood along the way and the few drops I did spot were really hard to find. Seemed like Hess lost focus a few times, not sure what happened there. I started him on the track a few times where he lost it, and he would focus a little longer. He really seemed to look hard when he lost the scent, trying to find it again. And I would praise him once he did. We eventually reached the end, this one was hard. Not sure if it was the conditions but pretty sure they had something to do with it. Also as we were on our way back to the truck I let Hess search the timbers as we walked the road, and suddenly Hessian starts barking like crazy! Well as I have learned through training and hunting him, Hess is loud on sight with just about anything. Ducks and especially Rabbits. Sure enough we could see it running away.A Snowshoe hare! After Hess lost sight of it he had to come tell us. Good Boy! Worked on “Heel” back to the truck and called it a day. Again pics are from my phone, but I had to put some up with this post. It’s just not the same without a picture or two. If anyone has comments or tips, advice please go right ahead.

Truly Addicted!!

Went and did some training in the woods on Sunday. Me and partner biz worked on all forest aspects of training. We did searching and obedience. On the down-stay and drive hunt Hess still whines a little bit. Not sure how much he can if at all during the test. If anyone has any insight or tips please advise. What I was impressed with most was the fox drag and bloodtracking. I had Biz drag a fox through the thick timber for a ¼ mile, let it sit for about 20 minutes and then put Hess on the track and off he went. After a few minutes of silence I heard something coming through the trees, it was Hess fox and all. It is a 13 lb fox so I was impressed that he brought it that far. Barely able to hold is head up he brought it back over a long distance. Awesome. Time for the blood track and it is starting to rain. By the time we were done with the blood track it became a torrential downpour! Started well on track with me and Biz right behind. Hess is starting to slow down a lot more, focusing on the track well. We got off track a couple times but no more than 30 feet or so each time. I could not believe how well he was tracking with the rain coming down so hard. Finally we reached the end of our ¼ mile blood track in the rain. Even though I was soaking wet I could care less after such an awesome performance. Really glad I got into this breed. Everything I see from them impresses me more. Especially when I see it in my own dog. Hope all is going well for others, and any tips you might have on the whining please feel free to comment. Hold on the Ground

Aw. Could it be,finally off the table for a few days? Need to work on Hold on the ground for a few days. Get those dogs to hold all kinds of bumpers and game while walking around. Doesn't sound hard but you'd be surprised. Before going on to Fetch we want to make sure there will be no issues so we can move forward and not have to divert to making backwards progress. Lola has been on the ground for a few days now doing well. Having a few issues with presentation and letting go sometimes. It is getting worked out, and after a few sessions last night i think she gets the hint. Sometimes it is easier said than done.
Jager too moved off the table and to the ground last night. First time so it was challenging, had a few drops but thats kind of expected. It is a weird transition from table to ground. In my opinion he is doing quite well. They will all come along.
Nik is actually on to Fetch. Been doing that for a few days now i suppose. All on the table, handler still holding the bumper but slowly working farther away from the dog and eventually will be putting the bumper on the table for retrieve.

HOLD

Here are a few pics from the days of Hold. Working on making sure they will hold that feather and fur before going to the ground. It's interesting to see each dogs different attitude towards each part of training. Some have a little attitude, some alot, and some none at all. One part to the HZP test is having to Fetch the rabbit after a rabbit drag, so we have been working really hard on the Hold so there are no drops, as in a hunting situation it is alot more ethical to have a dog that will fetch game and hold until it can put game in hand. Wouldn't be so great to shoot game, the dog retrieves but the animal is still alive and dog drops animal to watch fly or run away. That is why the HOLD is so important either if you are testing or hunting. This is Jager and Lola during Hold, walking up and down the table. Ready to move on to the ground and then its time for Fetch. Good work on the training guys. I know it is boring and not as productive as other stuff but it will be rewarding in the end. Just keep going.

VGP Training Update

No pictures for this post sorry. Been having issues with the camera and gave up. Had some serious training to do so i got busy.
Sunday I and helper Biz went to the Uintahs to do some forest work. Great day for it too, sunny, warm ,green. Runoff still flowing strong. Saw deer, grouse and such. Laid a 1/4 mile long blood track and let it set for 3 hours.
Meantime we worked on other areas of the VGP test. Biz went for a walk while Hess wasn't looking. Deep into the woods dropping a few bumpers along the way,and after dropping the last one hid where he could observe Hess. I released Hess with a hunt command and off he went, coming back every minute or so with a bumper and back in again. Finding the last one and heads out, Biz said Hess was looking real hard and covered alot of ground. Good to hear.
We walked through the forest letting Hess search and firing a couple shots from the shotgun. No problems there. Did fine.
Biz drug a rabbit for me about 1500 feet or so. Hid behind it and watched as Hess tracked it, found it and returned to me with no hesitation.
Forgot to get the fox from Zac so we had Hessian retrieve the Rabbit over fallen timber about 3 feet tall. No problem. Did great on this too.
Worked on some obedience like the Down Stay. Biz hid behind a tree and watched as i put Hess into a Down and walked off into the trees where he could not see me and fired 3 shots from the shotgun. Hess wasn't supposed to move from the position i put him in. Biz says he sat up and then went back to down before he could do anything. Perfect. I could do without the sitting up part but have a few months.
We also simulated a drive hunt, Biz went off into the woods making alot of noise, breaking branches and such. Fired 4 rounds from the shotgun. Hess stayed at my side unleashed but whined a bit, think i can fix that, Otherwise did great. Always likes to go search over the area when released. Can't blame him he is a hunter.
Finally back to the bood track. We approached the starting wound bed. I Platzed Hess and went to investigate. Came back and put the tracking collar and lead on and started off. "Hess, blood blood. Find the buck!" Off we go. Hess tracking strong and fast, need to work on slowing down a bit. Followed track well, jumped a grouse and i had to return his focus back to the blood which wasn't to bad. He took to the track right away again in speed mode but focused. Lost it a few times but not for long, turns back around by himself and starts tracking again. Along the way as i see blood i speak out "blood good boy find the buck". Seemed to help him get excited about it. Finally the end of our 1/4 mile long bloodtrack through the woods, over fallen timber and wet runoff hillsides! I am so stoked Hess is really catching on to this blood tracking thing.
All is well. Hope all training is going well for everyone else. Going to check out the Force Fetch event tonight, hopefully i will have an update on that as well. Happy training!

Bow Fishing Day

Looks like I may have to start another blog about a possible new addiction…..BowFishing. It is actually more like hunting than fishing. A hell of alot of fun. It was a nice,sunny, warm day out in the channels around Utah Lake. A bunch of guys that call themselves Carp Hunters, with air boats, jet boats and Mud Buddy boats. Arm themselves with bows and arrows and head out to get the stinky,nasty fish. Some of them took it a bit more serious than us. We fished, change that, we hunted for about 2 ½ Hours then decided we wanted some lunch. Back to the boat and Mac knows how to hook it up….Charcoal grill, sausages, beers and Patron’! My kind of lunch! We had to have a first time celebratory cheers but no shot glasses! Who are we to just swig from the bottle? Animals? Thanks to Mac-gyver, he had it taken care of with a little cutting of a beer can and crimping the edges to avoid cut lips! Fascinating! The hunting was fun, much like a spot and stalk type. Wading through the shallows, trying to be as quiet and wakeless as possible. Spotting the fish in the shallow water and slowly stalk ahead, drawing the bow as you approach, aim and release…….THWAP. Fish stuck, arrow through it and stuck to the mud. Most of them anyway, some we missed, some we hit high so they escaped and some jumped out of our bucket. Overall a really good time, fun people and unforgettable experiences. Sorry there is not more pics but my camera decided not to work that day. Force Fetch

The fun has begun! Force Fetch or Trained Retrieve has started in these neck of the woods. The table is built, the dogs have been up on the table a few times, the dogs and the handlers feel comfortable, everyone is relaxed and ready to go.

These handlers are all pretty well as new to this aspect of training as the their dogs are. These are first time photos and the video is pretty raw, pieced together the best I could.

I hope everyone is able to see this video because it shows a little of what can go down, how the dog can and will fight this training, and how the handler needs to remain calm in order to progress forward. They are all learning about the gloved hand, and learning the command to release. This is a very important first step and should be done carefully and methodically. Before moving on from this stage the dog should be accepting the gloved hand with no problem, not chewing or mouthing and staying still for at least 1 minute during a 4-5 time session. This really shouldn't last more than 10 minutes at this phase. If the dog is still giving you problems with any of this keep working at it until you get to the part I just explained. Only then would it be safe to go forward and on to HOLD.

Good Luck to all. Stay Calm. Be patient. In no time you will be back out in the field tossing bumpers and saying Fetch!

Training Table Construction Zone

Time to start working on Fetch. With the VJP behind us and the HZP only 5 months away for some it is time to get the Training Table built or pull it out of storage.
The only table around here was small and didn't have all the needed gadgets so we opted to build a new one. Pretty simple, could be done for around 100 bucks. Just need some 2x4's, a sheet of plywood, posts (wood or metal), cable to run the length of the table, a few snap closures, an extra collar and a foot hobbles made from 2 sided velcro. Some basic tools, saw, drill, tape measure and in some cases a Rat Tail File : ).
The one we built is 16 feet long with heavy duty uprights and cable. About 2 1/2 feet off the ground. Once the table is all built it is a good idea to get the dog up on it and walk them up and down the table while praising them and making them feel comfortable.
Once they feel comfortable you have done well, make sure you start off every session with making the dog feel comfortable. You can begin to place the dog's head through the collar on the post and affix the foot hobbles. The dog will most likely freak out but who wouldn't. Once the dog calms praise it and remove it from the table. Doing this a few times before you actually dig in to the training will help immensely. Now the dog should feel good about the table, and you know how the stationary collar and foot hobbles work.
At this point you can begin the training, showing the dog what "out, give,hand etc means with a gloved hand.Remember to stay calm.

VJP 2009 DOH!!!

Spring testing time is here and Last weekend was the VJP test. The first of three tests that test our patience and our dogs. We have been trying to prepare the pups as well as ourselves for this excursion but we were ill prepared.
Lola and Jager decided that they didn't really feel like tracking that day and Lola is somewhat of a bunny hater i guess. Could have been due to the few rabbits there were and some of them were those pesky Fast Black Rabbits that either leave no scent trail or are just to dang fast to tell which way they really ran!
We had hard time training for the Rabbit track as well due to low populations, and just didn't concentrate on it to much. Suppose we should have tried a little harder and used a few more hot dogs. Who knew.
Everything else was well, search and pointing was there. Cooperation was there. That was a big concern on Lola's end and she did great there. Jager pointed great, even pointed a runner which he eventually broke on gave chase through a barbed wire fence and caught the bird! Don't know how he couldn't have!
Sunday we sat back to watch Nik run his test, which went real good, qualified for Armbruster! Good job and Congrats Ron.
All in all it was a beautiful weekend, great weather, good friends and a little marinating went on with the "Harlem Crew". Thanks for the fun guys. Now we can move on to Force Fetch and prep work for the HZP. Congrats go out to the 20 dogs that also qualified for the Armbruster. Hopefully i see you there. Great Job
I myself am in serious thought about running the VGP this year so i need to get some work done.
Grab the double and some poppers it's going to be a long summer.!!!!

Izzy's Stay at Drahthaar Addiction

The Drahthaar Addiction Kennels are back in action with a new guest! We are currently boarding Izzy vom Wasatch ( not positive on given name). Her owner Jonathon has left her with us for a week. She is a young pup and a pleasure to work with. Its almost like having a new pup once a month. We have been working on the little important things. Basic Obedience, Searching, Intro to Birds, Intro to Fur, Intro to Water, Gunfire, and making her understand her role in a people pack.
She is a quick learner and has tons of drive! Heck of a nose too! I think Hessian has had just as much fun as we have with her. They enjoy running around chasing each other, wrestling and retrieving. I am Amazed to see her so happy and receptive to carrying a bunny around. it has been tons of fun. we still have 2 days left before she goes home and still have some good exercise planned ahead. Thanks Jonathon for giving me a chance and leaving Izzy with us. It has beem a great experience. Enjoy the pics everyone!

Playing around on Utah Lake

Went out to play with Fellow Addicts Mac and Zac on Utah Lake lastnight. Mac just got him a nice duck boat and wanted to try it out. We went real good for having three big guys and 3 furry dogs. Seemed to handle all of us no problem.
We stopped in a few different spots and let the dogs swim and chase bumpers. I was amazed at how well all the dogs handled the situation with having never been on a boat before except Jager.
The weather was excellent, water was glassy, all in all a great ride!
Thanks Mac it was fun! Can't wait for duck season now for sure!!!

Locks of Love

I decided it was time to get a haircut! After 10 + years of long hair i chose to shorten it. Cut off 11 inches!
The pony tail is GONE! I was told we could of used it for a Fox Drag, maybe use it as fur for Force Fetch, or even use it for Snake Avoidance Training. But i decided to do something way more useful and donate it to Locks Of Love. No this is not a new reality show on VH1, Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Figured they need it more. See you all soon, maybe you will still recognize me.

Ok, some of the following photos may be a bit too much for some people so, if you don't like gross read on and then close your eyes.
I started my preparation for Bloodtracking work. The first thing i did was read alot, did my research talked to a few people that had done this already and then set my sights on some blood!
This took some looking into. No average grocery butcher would hand over blood. Even the neighborhood specific butcher wasn't having it. I even tried the local game processor, they acted put out and like they had never heard of such a request.
Finally i contacted a local slaughterhouse and they helped me out. It cost 15 dollars but i got a 5 gallon bucket of blood.
The equipment I used was: 3 Five Gal buckets, Cloth Strainer, Empty bottles with lids, Funnel, Spray bottle to put blood in also, Gloves.
Should have gone right home and started straining but i was sidetracked and didn't get to it till a few hours later. Bad move! The blood had turned into one big Jello mold of blood clot. I could cut it with a paint stir stick. I cut chunks out of it. I took a big stick and began to mash and stir the gelatinous mass.
Once it was chunky and more fluid like, I could work with it better. I took my cloth strainer and placed it into another bucket and transferred the chunky clotted mess into the strainer bucket. I then proceeded to push on the mass and squeeze and strain more liquid out. I pulled the strainer out with the gelatin blood in it and had separated liquid now.
I quickly poured the liquid blood into smaller containers that i could freeze and use for my Bloodtracking work.
Quite the experience and quite messy, but actually kind of enjoyable! I did have fun doing it. But all of you who know me well enough could probably have guessed that!
If you are thinking of doing this yourself, do your research, get all the needed supplies, and plan accordingly. Do not wait to transfer and strain like i did.
And if you are having second thoughts, get a hold of me, i would be happy to prepare your blood for you!

Tattoos and Teeth

Wanted to remind everyone of this little detail,with the testing season here. Condition your pup to being handled at a test. The judges want to see the teeth and tattoo of your pup. They need your pup to hold still long enough to get a good look at ALL its teeth and verify the tattoo number with their paperwork. Nothing is worse than to have a pup that won't hold still or is fighting you. Those teeth are sharp and no one wants to get bit.
All you need to do is grab your pup and get low, try to squat down and bring the dog to a sit facing away from you. Grab the muzzle and open the mouth wide. The pup will more than likely fight and squirm, this is where it is your job to take control and make it understand that is unacceptable!
It will take time and time of repetition but most dogs conform quickly. During this time check all teeth are there and that the pup waits for you to check tattoo also. It is a good idea to get friends and family involved on this too. Sometimes a dog that is great for you is a handful to a stranger or judge. Besides, getting your pup used to this now will also help you and the judges out come Breed Show day.

Lola's Visit

I have been the lucky one to be boarding Lola vom Wasatch for a week or 2. Zac had some things come up to where he would be unable to do anything with her so i volunteered for the duty.
It has been a very interesting yet fun 2 weeks so far. I have been working with her very diligently on all aspects of her training. We have been working on in house and basic obedience like Go To Bed, Down, Platz, Heel, Come, Sit. Many of these same commands also being worked while in the field and under distraction and also reinforcing now with the E collar.
Been doing lots of Field Work, Pointing, Tracking, Searching, and Cooperation / Obedience in the field.
Her point is staunch, tracking is coming along nicely, she is looking to which direction i am walking and changing her search accordingly. She has been a pleasure to work with and really gets me in the mood for a new pup. Seeing the things i did wrong with Hessian and then seeing the progress with Lola really gets me fired up. It makes me wish i did this full time.
With the wife involved we have even got the Grooming area covered, after a long day in the field the dogs get a quick hose off with a little shampoo, rinsed dried and brushed! Amazing.
I know Hessian has had fun with a girl around, bet he will miss her when she is returned home.
Hope Zac will be satisfied with the First Timer Boarding and Training of Drahthaar Addiction Kennels.
Soon to come updates of the training happening in the valley with the crew of guys we got here.

Breed Show 10\11

Finally the Breed Show is over and walked out with a 10\11! Overall it went pretty well. It was a nice day in Farr West at a nice facility supplied by Steve Field. Thanks Again Steve. Alot of open area inside to parade the dogs around, and outside was a long open area to run the dogs.
I had thought that i had done enough practice but that was beside the point. I still was not prepared and neither was Hessian. He gave the judges a run for their money while trying to check his teeth. Practice this religiously, it almost hurt the score because they couldn't get a real good look at his bite.
Did good during the part where they check his coat, height and length. Also did fairly well while being trotted around for the judges. He acted a bit nervous not so proud, head not held so high when inside. I could of done a better job handling him as well, we didn't have good rhythm together and i had to practically jog to get him at a pace the judges needed to see. But once we stepped outside he was a completely different dog. I felt his energy change completely. He was happy and proud to strut his stuff for the judges outside. Even sat real noble like for pictures.
All in all everything went well, it was nice to see some good looking ugly dogs and there owners.
Look forward to seeing you all again at Testing or Training. Next is the VGP and maybe someone will see something in Hessian that they want in a stud. See you all soon.

New Toy

Just got a cool new toy. Not sure if it is more fun for me or the dog. I only played with it for a few minutes, i will delve in more this weekend but its a cheap alternative to the loud gunshot type of launcher. Which is my next purchase by the way.
It does a pretty good job of getting it out there. I was at the local park and still didn't have enough room so that says something.

Protect our Fishing Please

Last summer the Utah Supreme Court ruled that all streams in Utah are legal to access as long as a person stays in the river bed. This is easily the greatest improvement to hunting/fishing that has ever happened in Utah. Not surprisingly, big agriculture and developers are not happy with the ruling and are working in the legislature right now to remove the law. Here is what I know so far: A powerful Rep from Coalville (Mel Brown) is working to completely remove the law. A powerful Rep from Box Elder County (Ben Ferry) is working toward a compromise bill that allows big landowners an exemption from the law, but lets us fish in rivers that are listed an navigable. There are very few rivers that are listed as navigable, so this is not good either. These bills are held in the protected bill file in the legislature, which means that no one can have access to what they say or what they intend to accomplish. This allows the sponsors to gather support in backdoor meetings and trade-offs, then they can spring it for vote at the last minute and get it passed before most reps know what it's ramifications are. Very tricky. Our best hope is to mount a pre-emptive strike by contacting our representatives now and have them ready to defeat any attempt to water down or repeal the stream access law when it is sprung upon them. Please send this to everyone you have ever known that has ever held a fishing pole in Utah. It is a classic landowner/developer vs. common man fight and we are not in the power position. Please ask your representative to protect you from the special interests of the rich and maintain our right to access public waters to pursue public wildlife. If you don't know your representative's email or phone number, contact me and I'll get it for you. This is important. K-9 Training

I know these are not Drahthaars. The top one is a Belgian Malinois. The bottomt is a Dutch Shepherd in action.
The reason for this post is just to show how proud of my nephew i am. He is the Canine Manager for SLC F.D. He trains and works with dogs all over the country to prepare them and handle them in Urban Search and Rescue situations. He also does live find and cadaver dogs as well. He has traveled all over training and testing his dog Wersley as well as many other dogs he has prepared for other orginizations. He has a Chocolate Lab, a Belgian Malinois and is now in the process of getting a Dutch Shepherd.
He is looking to test these dogs according to the Dutch standard of what they call the KNPV.
Much like the Germans the Dutch have a very strict way of doing things. This is the only orginization that will certify these dogs as Urban Search dogs that have really been put to the test! I think it is really cool that he is getting so into this that he will have to travel to Holland to test and certify these dogs.

We were working on getting the pups familiar with water, and see if we could get some swimming in, worked on searching while walking all over not saying much.
I am preparing Hessian for the Breed Show in February. Alot of heeling, trotting, whoaing,platzing and hands on handling. like a judge would do.
I have also been working on Steadiness and Down from a far distance.
Everything seems right on track. Also with the new pups, everything is right on schedule, need to get in some bunny work and time to really crack down for the VJP.

Went out with Hessian this last friday to hunt down some rabbits for a few guys that need them for their pups. Saw about a dozen but none within shotgun range unfortunately.
While Hessian was searching as big as he does, i heard him yelping in pain, so i ran to his location about 50 yards away and there he was with his front leg caught in this trap. Screaming and pulling, so i rush to him and see the trap, no teeth thankfully. Carefully i open the trap, he yanks his foot out and starts running around me watching what i do. He did not get hurt at all, didn't seem to bother him one bit.
I was really ticked off, Not knowing much about trapping, i've talked to a few people and been on a couple forums. It is legal, and it happens alot, dogs getting caught that is.
Just another thing to keep your eye on when in the field. You never know what you will encounter in the desert. Happy Hunting.

Kennel Question.

I added a poll just above the Post section.
I am curious about something.
I kennel Hessian in an outdoor kennel 6x6x6. Have since he was a pup. I have a small yard and as we all know the drive of this breed, i have always been concerned he would "hunt" his way out.
It is not a problem for I or the dog. He enjoys his kennel and i know he is there when i get home. Besides it has made training easier in my opinion.
My nephew and house mate has a 1 year old dog that he does not crate or kennel for personal reasons. No problem. Just curious on peoples insight as to if Hessian being kenneled, seeing this dog have free roam, in the yard, in the house, in the yard, starts to want to act up, or not always listen so hot cuz he sees this dog free.
Lately he has busted birds on more than one occassion and has started doing the old puppy race car around the yard upon being let out.

Bad Dog Chew Toy

Just a heads up not to buy this toy for your Drahthaar.
Not sure if your DD has the same case of the OCD as Hessian but man what a powerful chewer. I had bought this toy for him to take his mind of the Lick Granuloma and in 45 minutes he had destroyed it! Good thing i was there and did not let him swallow any of it or it would have been another expensive vet bill!
Stick with the indestructible Nylabone types.
Petco was nice enough to let me return it.

Lick Granuloma

Hessian has a Lick Granuloma. This is a small sore caused by licking an area constantly. Seems that they start out small and get bigger as time and the licking go on.
The licking is caused out of frustration and drive.
When locked in a kennel day after day, separated from its owner or new things stressing the dog a high prey drive dog has been known to pick a spot and lick away.
The licking is soothing and/or sends endorphins to the brain much like satiating on a bone or toy.
If not treated the dog will lick and lick until the sore is red and infected. There is not much info on an actual cure, just antibiotics and and taking the mind of the area. Even when covering or bandaging the area it has been known for the dog to start licking on another area. The most common area is the wrist area or carpral area.
I have Hessian on Antibiotics now and have given him bones to take his mind off it. But just keep this in mind if you begin to see a pattern in your dogs licking behavior. Thought this might be interesting and help someone out if there dogs develop sores like these.
It took 160 dollars for me to find out.

Pheasant Derby 2008

Headed on out to Wasatch Wings and Clays for the Pheasant Derby and what a blast!
The event started at 8 am and off we went to kill pheasants. The first two areas we tried were empty. No birds to be found. I was started to get really anxious, wondering if Hessian was even hunting for us. With an hour left into the derby we changed spots one more time. Ten minutes into this area and BAM Hessian locked up on a staunch point. Waited for me to approach and flush bird and with a few "Wait"'s from me, Hessian hung tight and waited for the bird to be shot.
Then with a "Fetch" from me off he went on the retrieve. He returns and sits, bird in hand!
We continued our course and found another rooster to our surprise in an area that had been hunted earlier.
They had some great prizes like, memberships, chukar hunts, shotguns, antelope tags, Carhart jackets, hats etc.
All in all was a great time, the guys i went with were able to win some great prizes and get a few birds.
My nephew Biz and i hung out a bit longer and picked us up 4 more birds in an hour, thanks to the help of my hunter Hessian.
One thing for certain, I learned to trust my dog! If he smells no bird then there is no bird. Good Times.

Took a drive out to the desert once again, but instead of training, we went for hunting!
Sure is nice to be able to use all the skills i have been training to real use. This was our first time out really hunting since we passed the HZP. Wish we had gone some where that had birds but of course we got skunked again.
The weather was great, and I took a few family and friends along. It was cool to be hunting behind my hunting buddy Hessian. Next time we will get those damn devil birds. Alot of hiking and beautiful scenery but where o where chukar where art thou?
Got some big plans to do some Preserve hunting this coming weekend. Hopefully that goes better! Enjoy the pics and the Video of Hessian rock climbing, just looking for Chukar like the rest of us!

So excited for fellow addict and close training buddy Zac, with his new pup Lola Ice vom Wasatch!
Cute little pup and Zac was ready. Starting over with a new pup and a whole new outlook on what it takes to train this breed properly. Pay attention new comers Zac has had some challenging experiences with this breed and has some good advice!

HZP is over for me! Passed with a 178!

Sorry it has been so long but right after i got home from the test I took off for the Elk hunt, but here is a post.
Tested in my first HZP test September 28th and what an experience! The weather was warm and sunny, alot different than the HZP i watched last year. I was really nervous and not quite sure what to expect from Hessian that day. We were in a new area, sleeping in a motel room and he was going to be spending alot of time in his crate until his turn to test. Not a problem for most dogs except when Hessian's switch goes on its on and it doesn't shut off until we are home for an hour. Regardless everything went very well.

Did have a few scary moments,during the Field search/pointing section points were great but on retrieve found a live chukar before the dead one and took off in a chase right through a barbwire fence luckily no damage done.

During the rabbit drag, released well,tracked well,found rabbit turned and headed back to me. With me praising from the point i could see him till he was just a few feet away then suddenly he decides to veer right and go hang out in the bush for a few seconds then returns to me and without a sit i rushingly take the rabbit. Passed that though.

Next during the water work, gun tolerance goes well, but on retrieve he swims in to shore stops in the water at the bank drops it, picks it up and then comes in, no sit and a give.

On the blind retrieve, crosses over fine, finds duck quickly and then runs up and down the shore on the opposite side trying to figure how to come back, realizing i am where i can not get to him he decides to hide behind a bush, drop and damn near pluck the duck. Something clicked and he decided to swim over to my bank and again stop in the water. As i approach to take the duck he swims away and then quickly reverts and comes upon shore looking a little unsure of my mood with him. "Give". Good dog. Only one more thing to do right... How bad can it be.

Search Behind the Duck time. I release him to fetch the duck off he goes, swimming away, goes to other side and is sniffing away. Making alot of noise here comes the duck swimming out of cover and heading down the channel, but here comes Hessian a few seconds later can't see the duck but smells it. Follows smell around corner and next thing you know 'arf arf arf ' He found it! He sees it! Barking all the way swimming after the duck, the barking gets farther and farther away til we can not hear or see anything. The judges inform me to try and call him back so i do. No success. Over and over, whistling, calling. Wondering where the hell is my flippin dog! Even the judges are whistling him now. How embarrassing right? They inform me to go take a walk along the bank calling to him and so i do and as i get to the other side. I see people waving me back to them. Hessian has returned. Whew. Over right? No, the judges still need to see a retrieve. So release Hessian into the water and they toss out a duck, he retrieves, comes back to shore, out of the water walks around me, heads back to water then slowly turns my way and sits. I hurry and take the duck. Thinking were done! But scared of not passing cause he didn't listen and would not come back.

   Come to find out it was a good thing, it showed his desire and how he will not stop or give up during a search. So done. Made it through it.
   Next time I will be sure my dog is Force Broke. Got some dings on Manner of Retrieve but still a great score! Passed with 178 Points!
   Want to say thanks to Lynn for walking along with me during my field search and hanging around waiting for me to finish each portion with advice after. It really makes a handler feel good knowing his breeder supports him.
   Also to the Judges Shane, Phil and Bruce, Thank you for an informative and fun experience, I appreciate all of our advice and calming words along the way, letting me know i was still in it and doing fine. It helps to hear those thing in a tense situation.
   And finally thanks to all the other handlers and spectators that were watching and supporting me through my first HZP. It got tense a few times there, nice to see others wishing the best and lending helpful advice. Thanks for the pics and all the crunch time training help Zac. And to my wife Carrie, thanks for all your support and letting me do what i gotta do!

Talkin Bout HZP!

My world has officially stopped. All focus is on the HZP Test this weekend. I will actually be testing Hessian on Sunday, time to see what my training efforts will produce. The HZP is the second test in the series of testing that goes on inside the VDD. In this test the dog will be judged on it's abilities as a versatile hunting dog. Much like the VJP in scoring but different in that there are added abilities to watch for as well as water work and retrieving. The subjects judged are as follows: Tracking, Use of Nose, Search, Pointing, Cooperation, Desire to Work.

Water Work consisting of Gun Tolerance, Retrieving, Blind Retrieve in Dense Cover, Search Behind the Duck.

Retrieving of Furred Game, Feathered Game, Manner of Retrieve, and Obedience. The biggest part of training should have been accomplished by this time.

My best advice to those looking or getting there pups would be to join the VDD, research, and involve yourself with the testing system. I know it might not be for all people, in fact i wasn't sure if it was for me,but this is a breed of dog that is not for everyone too. These are high drive dogs bred to hunt. That is what they live and breathe to do, it takes a bit more patience, perseverance,and commitment to training and knowledge of dogs and dog behavior. These are not for the light hearted or sensitive souls and in my experience being part of an organization like the VDD who's members,breeders and judges will go that extra way to help another out is very commendable. I would not know where to begin training a Drahthaar without help.

I am extremely nervous for Sunday, I have trained myself and Hessian so hard I just don't want to fail. My biggest concern arose last week when it finally occurred to me that maybe Hessian is not Force Broke yet. Causing a bit of concern on my part wondering what will happen will he bring the duck,bird or rabbit back? Another would be my choice of using the E collar as much as i did i may have screwed up a bit there, not only has he grown wise to it i have become dependant on it and unsure of what my dog will do without it. I have 2 days till i find out.

Advice to those who do plan on testing: Start now. Whether you have a pup now or on the way. If waiting on pups start your research, start reading, start calling people and going with others to watch tests or training. If you already have a pup start conditioning it to retrieve, track, use its senses, and obey. Teach your pup who is in charge all the time, no question. Do not let it get the best of you be dominate and controlling. Of course let it be a puppy but make sure it understands you let it. Start dragging hot dogs or meat and teaching the dog to follow its trail to the prize. Teach it to use its nose and smell a planted bird a few feet away and watch that pup point! Take photos and let it soak up those points no rush. Teach it to chase after a frozen bird you toss and praise joyfully the first time it brings the bird back. Get it in the water alot and soon, those little back yard pools are great. Start firing a cap gun or making loud noise, start showing it what sit,down, stay and come mean. Take it's food from it at random, turn on its back and hold it there, play with its muzzle and teeth and ears and do not let it get angry about any of it. Most of all love your pup, exercise your pup for soon you too will be nervous for your HZP.

I also added a few new forum links, just easy access to some of the forums that i like to visit and see what everyone is talking about these days. Utah Bird Dog forum had changed its address so i updated that and also added Gun Dog forum. Have fun visiting those. All my Reading and Viewing Material is now linked to a source too.

It took a while but hopefully i got it right. I made a video with all the pictures Zac sent me,even addded some music, I hope everyone enjoys it, It has a little of everything. The only thing there are no photos of is the bloodtracking portion, as we could not tag along during this test. All the judges and coordinators did a great job in my opinion to plan and prepare this test. The handlers did very well in preparing there dogs for this test also. All handlers and judges had a nice big camp spot set aside up Logan Canyon near Bear Lake and the areas the test took place was perfect hunting country. Perfect for a hunt test. Great job everyone, you guys put on a great show.All 8 of 8 dogs passed. Keep up the good work judges that is a tough gig, maybe i will join in the fun of judging one day.
It's back to training for me, HZP in 7 days so enjoy the video.

Wild West Chapter VGP

Headed out to Logan Canyon to watch the VGP this weekend and WOW is the only way i can describe it. Absolutely amazing what these dogs can do. Anything. They are a true hunting dog through and through.
All will be talking about this VGP for a while because it was one of the better in years. All handlers and dogs were well prepped and all 8 dogs that tested passed.
One of the more amazing shows was Scott Doxey and his dog Gracie who completed the overnight bloodtracking and also the Dead Game Guide portion. Really put on a clinic style performance.
Congrats to all handlers and dogs. It really goes to show that all your hard work and determination in training does pay off. There really is alot involved you should all be very proud of this accomplishment. Thanks to the judges and coordinators who put on a great show, that is some hard work and dedication to the breed.More to come as soon as possible. There is alot of photos and alot to be discussed.
I will try to post more promptly but I am also prepping for the HZP so please be patient,
